| From 1942 to 1956, the NOP near Mead, Nebraska produced munitions for the US military especially during the World War II and Korean War years. Made up of a range 17,000 acres large this plant, while producing munitions on four lines, also stored them. Ammonium Nitrates were also produced here. Along with Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant, this site has experienced environmental problems especially with ground water concerns. Remedial efforts are underway by the government to solve those problems. After its closure, the site was utilized by many organizations including 9,000 acres to the University of Nebraska as an Agricultural Research Station. Various crops, livestock animals and farming machines and methods are tested here. The area was also used by the US Air Force to house an Atlas-D ICBM complex. Active from 1961 to 1964, these three missles constitued one of America's first ICBM sites and stood ready to fire in the event of war. They were closed during 1964. Finally, the Nebraska Army National Guard utilizes the Ashland Training Site for training manuovers. The site is also used as a non-commissioned officer training acadamy for the National Guard. Looking to the future, a revolutionary Ethanol plant was constructed on the grounds in 2007. Sources: http://www.epa.gov/oecaerth/resources/publications/cleanup/er3/e3bio-fs.pdf |
