| Kearney Air Force Base 1947-1949 | ||||||
| One of the lesser known Air Bases of Nebraska was the short-lived Kearney AFB. It was one of the few Army Air Fields to survive the sweep of base closures through 1946 and went on to accually host a Strategic Air Command Wing. The 27th Fighter Wing operated from Kearney during the late 1940's. Flying F-82 Double Mustang Fighters, this fighter escort wing was one of the exceptions to SAC's history of bombers and missiles. Unfortunately for Kearney, the 27th Fighter Wing recieved F-84 Thunderjets and were then transferred to Bergstrom AFB in Texas, since the smaller Kearney field could not operate the jets to their full potential. One year after this, in 1949 Kearney AFB Closed Today it is home to the Kearney Municipal Airport and reminders of the base are still present to this day. |
