"Muhammad Ali on the 20th Century"

When I was young, I was a professional boxer. But that’s not my “field” anymore. My most important job now is trying to teach people to treat each other with dignity and respect.

I believe the world is a better place now than it was a thousand years ago, although there’s still too much suffering and hate.

But a thousand years ago, slavery was accepted. It’s not anymore.

A thousand years ago, people thought that war was the way nations should settle disputes. Now one of the world’s highest honors is the Nobel Peace Prize.

A thousand years ago, people of different religions and colors almost never associated with one another. Now people of all races and religions are friends.

I am devoting much of my life today to HEALING the human spirit. My chosen path for doing this is through my religion. Other men and women of goodwill might choose a different road to reach the same end. But I believe that the next thousand years will bring a golden age of tolerance and understanding among all people.

My religion teaches me that God wants us to love one another. And I believe that love, not hate, is at the heart of God’s master plan.
