FOODSTOCK 2003

HOME

For the fifth year running, Darton College will be sponsoring a charity concert on Wednesday, Oct. 22 from 11a.m. till 9p.m. The event, called Foodstock V, will be held on Darton’s campus and will feature local bands, singing contests, an open mike, and refreshments. The event is free to everyone. Those who attend are asked to bring two or more can goods. Proceeds will be donated to the Albany Rescue Mission and Southwest Georgia Foodbank.

Five years ago, Foodstock was not a charity concert. Its original purpose was a student protest against an abysmal school cafeteria. Organizers felt that the way in which food was sold to students was injuring the school and inhibiting growth. The first concert featured only one band, and did not have enough food to go around. The result was a fun campus activity that largely benefited the school, as the cafeteria fed the students as the event’s supplies quickly ran out.

Foodstock has come a long way since 1999. The campus activity is now expanded into a public event drawing in community support and funding. The featured talent has now expanded to a dozen local bands, some of which are now touring. There is certainly enough food to accommodate the crowd. Numerous food donations including hot wings from Hooters, pizza from Papa John’s and Harvest Moon, and hot dogs from Hot Dog King are just a few promising additions to this year’s experience. Food Lion is helping by allowing organizers to place donation bins in their stores and many local businesses are willing to help in advertising.

There has been enormous support from the school as well. Darton students are still at the center of the organizational process. Jimon Cutliff, a Foodstock organizer, said "We’ve been working daily from the beginning of the semester, August 25th, lining up bands and getting donations. We want the community to come in and have fun… get a feel for Darton. At the same time we can do something for the needy."

What began five years ago as a protest against an arcane college cafeteria has flourished into a wonderful example of community activism. Last year, the event generated donations of more that 1,500 can goods. This year attendance is expected to increase and more students, bands, and members of the community are getting involved.
