The Netherlands
The Netherlands is not just Amsterdam like people seem to think.
There are a lot of smaller towns where you can enjoy the Dutch
culture and natural beauties!
| Amsterdam, capital of The Netherlands, is the main destination for travelers. The first thing everybody see is usually the railway station. | Amsterdam has a lot of channels (grachts) and it's very nice to walk along all of them and have a boat trip. | ||
| Amsterdam is not the capital of Holland like many people think (that's Haarlem!). | In fact, Holland is a province (or actually 2 provinces, N.Holland and S.Holland) of The Netherlands. | ||
| A Dutch stereotype: a windmill, in the area north of Amsterdam. | And a nice garden of a house on the channel, in Volendam. | ||
| Marken, very touristic town, has this nice harbour and attracttion for the tourists looking for the typical Holland of the past. | And Edam is famous for it cheese and cheese market. | ||
| Scheveningen, is the beach side of Den Haag (the administrative capital of The Netherlands) | The left hand picture is taken from the top of the tower you see in the right hand one. | ||
| Utrecht is definitely one of the most beautiful towns of the country. | And as every Dutch city has its "gracht". This is the "Oudegracht" (old channel). | ||
| But The Netherlands has lots of other small towns definitely worth a visit. This is Arnhem. | And this is s'Hertogenbosch (or Den Bosch that's easier). | ||
| The main holiday in The Netherlands is Koninginendag (Queens Day). Millions of people invade Amsterdam for a 30 hours party! | And students organize their parties all around the country, like my friend Bob, here in Utrecht (April 30th, 1999). |
