Alliant Techsystems "Freewill" CIWS
Alliant Techsystems "Freewill" CIWS

The success of the Arena IV CIWS system, Alliant Techsystems engineers immediately began work on their own CIWS to counter that system. Using some of the systems developed on the Vulcan IV CIWS, they came up with the Freewill CIWS system. Like the Arena IV, it's main function is to protect vehicles and installations from missile attack. Like the Vulcan, it uses the same radar system for acquiring targets.
The system is built around a four barreled M33 Heavy Machine Gun that fires the caseless 7.62 x 51mm rounds fed from a 600 round drum. Unlike the Vulcan IV, it is mounted below the weapon system. This allows easy field reloading, as the ammo hopper is in the open. This is not considered a problem, as if necessary, the hopper can be quickly detached from inside the vehicle. The turret is fully anti-aircraft capable. The mini turret is fully anti-aircraft capable, and offers a full 360º coverage around the vehicle. The kit comes with a standard mount. However, Alliant can mount the system on a custom mount if necessary.
The Freewill mounts a pulse radar system with Doppler sharpening for foul weather environments, that is highly resistant to ECM on the "head" of the system, which it bears the likeness of the Phalanx system. It can detect targets up to 2.5 km, allowing it to set itself to the targets path. The system can track up to eight targets, and engage four targets simultaneously. Mounted alongside the radar system is a modified Tactical Computer (effective Level 6) to assist in the targeting radar. It's range is equivalent to the radar's range, providing excellent coverage of the area. Additionally, as a test, Alliant engineers hooked up an ECD system as a "just for giggles" test. Well, the test worked out, as some higher ups thought that would give it an edge against other systems. Consequently, the Alliant PP4 ECD system was added to the base chassis along with Power Amplifiers to increase the effective range. This gives an edge, simply by being able to effectively distribute fire on a target as needed.
When purchased, the Freewill comes with two empty ammo drums, and some spares, as well as with a one year garauntee.

CF Required: 4
Economy: NA (Idle: 1 hour/PF)
Fuel: Electric (32 PF)
Sensors: Security I (5)
ECD: Military I (4)
Other Features: Pilot (5, Target Acquisition), Power Amplifiers (5).
Armament: One anti-aircraft capable mini turret that mounts one M33 Heavy Machine Gun with extended barrels fed by a 600 round ammo drum.
Weight (Combat): 168.52 kilograms
Initiative: 30 + 1D6

The M33 HMG mounts extended barrels (increase all range brackets by 25%) and it requires a complete Combat Turn (3 seconds) for the barrels to rotate to the proper speed. It should be noted that the weapon gets the power from the vehicle to rotate the barrels.
