Arena IV Point Defense System
Arena IV Point Defense System
The Arena IV system is a development of the old Arena system developed in the late 20th Century. The system consists of a modified turret with a three barreled machine gun mated to a pulse radar system. The system is designed to intercept and destroy incoming missiles on armored vehicles. It is built around a 12.7mm KPV Model 45/34 heavy machine gun, and uses the same ammunition. However, the weapon fires a five round burst firing APDS rounds to penetrate the outer skin of a missile to detonate it. The pulse radar has a range of 1.5 km, while the KPV has a maximum range of 1,875m.
The 12K78 radar has a range of one and a half kilometers, allowing the Arena IV system to effectively target an incoming missile long before it hits the vehicle. It can scan in a full 360º, and can discriminate between a bird and a missile. It can track up to ten targets on a "continuos" mode, which the radar dish rotates 360º. The scan can be resized to a 180º "slice" as well as 90º to 45º, to either reduce the electromagnetic emissions or due to terrain. The weapon will always point to the front in the 360º acquisition mode as well as the 180º scan zone. At 90º, the weapon will point in the "center" on which direction the scan zone is pointed, and also at 45º. This can be set manually by the user, or set on automatic. Discrimination is automatic, without an "ground to air" mode for the system. However, like all radars, it is susceptible to jamming, and terrain. The radar system is mounted on top of the weapon mount, and does not interfere with the weapons elevation. The Arena-IV system does not react to: targets at a range of over 50 meters from the vehicle; small-size targets (splinters, small caliber projectiles); targets flying away from the vehicle, including projectiles fired from its own weapons; slow flying objects (pieces of earth, birds etc.); shells and projectiles exploding around the vehicle; or targets flying over the vehicle
The three barrel KPV machine gun is mounted on a micro turret, using an "arm" mount to allow fast acquisition, and target destruction. This comes equipped with adjusters that reduce the heavy recoil of the weapon. The other benefit is easy access to the weapon for repairs, but is also more vulnerable due the fact that it is exposed. It is fully anti-air capable, and is able to be mounted on a wide variety of systems, including LAVs, and some aircraft. Ammunition is held in a bin that rotates with the turret, preventing jams, increasing reliability and safety of the system, and the bin carries 600 rounds, more than enough for a mission. Reloading is simple, with pre filled canisters. KPV offers a field reloading kit that can reload the canister within five minutes. The main access panel to the canister has a "pop-up" switch that allows them to "pop" the canister up for easy removal in the field. An automated system orients the canister to the feed mechanism, solving the problem of alignment and making sure the feed system is secure. Access to the system is accomplished by the use of access panels around the turret, and to the weapon itself.
The standard Arena IV kit consists of the Arena system in a turret ring mount (though custom versions are available), two spare ammunition canisters, and spares.
