| Wicked begins at the end of the story with Glinda coming down in a bubble to give the citizens of Oz the good news of the death of the Wicked Witch--also known in the musical as Elphaba. The audience is then transported back in time where they learn of Elphaba's birth. Fast forward a few years and Elphaba is at Shiz University to help her crippled sister, Nessarose, with her education in magic. It is here Elphaba first meets Galinda (Synopsis). At first, the two witches hate one another. Born with emerald skin, Elphaba has never really been liked, while Galinda was the most popular female in her hometown. However, Elphaba is extremely smart and befriends many teachers at Shiz. She even gets accepted into Headmistress Madame Morrible's sorcery program that Galinda desperately wanted into. This causes a larger rift between the two roommates (Synopsis). The professer and goat Doctor Dillamond tells Elphaba that the Animals in Oz are being taken away and reduced to nothing more than, well, animals. Very soon after, Prince Fiyero transfers into Shiz University and becomes Galilnda's boyfriend. Meanwhile, the entire University is preparing for a dance. Being infatuated with Galinda, the munchkin named Boq asks her to the dance. Galinda diverts him to Nessarose and has him ask her instead. "As she's searching through her clothes, Galinda finds this disgusting black, pointed hat that she never wore. As a cruel joke, she decides to give it to Elphaba." (Synopsis) In return for the "gift" from Galinda, Elphaba gets her into Madame Morrible's sorcery program. Galinda feels horrible, but decides to make an effort to befriend the green girl. Now things begin to shake up. Fiyero starts to fall in love with Elphaba while Doctor Dillamond is being taken away. In class, Elphaba is outraged that a lion cub is being experimented on with magic, and orders for it to be stopped (Synopsis). Together, she and Fiyero free the lion in the woods. As they awkwardly leave the company of one another, Elphaba learns that she has officially been invited to the Emerald City. "All discussing the kidnapping of Doctor Dillamond, Galinda announces that she will change her name to Glinda in honor of the goat's mispronunciation." (Synopsis) Feeling bad for Glinda, Elphaba invites her to the Emerald City. Together they meet the Wizard of Oz who wants Elphaba as his right-hand man. But in order to do so, she must give his assistant, a monkey, the ability to fly. "Elphaba opens up the Grimmerie--an ancient sorcery book--in order to do the spell." (Synopsis) The monkey begins to grow wings. The wizard then shows Elphaba her power by opening a curtain. She sees a cage full of monkeys with wings. Upset with herself for using magic on animals, she grabs the Grimmerie and escapes. She tells Glinda that she now knows what her destiny is, and that she will fight the Wizard with all of her power. (Synopsis) Act II begins with Glinda being happy because she is getting married. Fiyero actually leaves in the middle of the ceremony because he is so upset about Elphaba's disappearance. Back at the Emerald City however, Elphaba frees the flying monkeys. The Wizard tries to stop her by telling her that he can make her a celebrity. Elphaba almost gives in until she sees a shrouded figure who turns out to be Doctor Dillamond. He is completely reverted from an Animal to an animal. Meaning and Animal who can speak and think like a human to an animal that has no extrordinary talents of this nature (Maguire, 56). Fiyero suddenly bursts in and saves Elphaba from the Wizard. Together the two run away and confirm their newfound love. "Before they can run off to Fiyero's abandoned castle, Elphaba sees a strange vision of a flying house in the sky. She flies off to Munchkinland to discover the arrival of Dorothy and the death of her sister." (Synopsis) Guards take Fiyero and order him to reveal Elphaba's hiding place. He is sentenced to death, and is hung in a field to die. Elphaba now has Dorothy captured in her castle. Glinda arrives and persuades her to let Dorothy free. After receiving a note reguarding Fiyero, Elphaba emotionally collapses (Synopsis). "Convinced that she can only spread wickedness no matter how hard she tries, Elphaba tells Glinda to take over so that goodness may spread over Oz." (Synopsis) She also makes Glinda swear that she will never clear the name of the Wicked Witch so that others will not turn against Glinda. Elphaba teaches Glinda how to use the Grimmery. Shortly afterward, Dorothy melts Elphaba. Now the audience is back at the beginning of the show. Glinda is preparing to tell all of Oz of the Wicked Witch's death. But is there more?
