Eccentric Flamingoes Match Report
Eccentric Flamingoes vs. Wolfson
Inverleith Park, 11th May 2000
Result: Wolfson won by 5 wickets
Another typical night in an E dinburgh summer,
sun shining but bloody freezing. This match had the added spice
of the first time Wallace and Fowler facing a Wolfson team. After
the unsavoury happenings during the closed season this pair were
looking to kick ass, but who's ass would end up getting kicked?
I assume EF won the toss and followed the tactics of the previous
captain of batting first in May.
The opening partnership of Bilsland and Pratt got the EF of to a fantastic start until Urwin took the first wicket by clean bowling Pratt . Next in, Hinds put in a solid batting performance with a score of 20 ( the highest of the night for the EF ) before being bowled by Hayes. Captain Hannah put in a captains performance, exemplifying the phrase "hit out or get out" and got out. A middle order partnership of Patterson and McKenzie rattled on the score, until the first over by Fallon. Using a fairly unorthodox style sometimes referred to as "chucking" he first speared the wicket of McKenzie and then four balls later ducked Fowler. The next over saw the exit of Patterson, bowled by fellow flamingo, Granville. Was this the much talked off Flamingo batting collapse? Would anyone be out for not missing the ball heading for middle stump? All the questions were answered by Wallace. Obviously pumped up for the game Wallace scored a quick 11 before being caught on the boundary going for the big SIX.
Wallace questioning the celebration dance saying "He carried that over the boundary, isn't that six?" , however, umpire Baird had the finger up. With overs running out the last two batsman, the Edinburgh movers and shakers Kerr and influential Lyell, who had influenced himself higher up the batting order, moved and shook the total to 114.
Eccentric Flamingoes Innings: 114-8 (Bilsland 18, Hinds 20, McKenzie 19, Granville 1-8)
The opening overs saw Flamingo pitched against Flamingo, O' Hara and Hinds pitting their wits against Ramsay and Granville followed by Wallace and Hannah pitting their wits against Ramsay and Granville - are they still there!! In the f ifth over the breakthrough came with Wallace clean bowling Ramsay. When the next over eventually got started following the celebrations from Wallace, Hannah bowled Granville.
Wolfson scored steadily until a good spell from Patterson taking two wickets from his two overs, one assisted by a great catch from Hannah diving forward and being 6ft4 just got there. This brought Urwin to the crease who then slashed his way to 25. Wolfson were now in a commanding position helped by steady scoring compounded by oc casionally lacklustre fielding. This was demonstrated by the scoring of the winning runs in the second last over. O'Hara going for what would have been a glorious run out, pouncing on the ball, pickup and throwing in what seemed the one movement sent the ball straight at the wicket but unfortunately about six feet too high. Kerr made a valiant attempt to stop the ball, as did Patterson, Pratt and then Hinds before the ball eventually got to the boundary for a further four runs.
As it turned out Wolfson had already won the game in the previous over but had kept going due to the low confidence they had in their adding.
