This episode actually begins before the scene.  We see an old admiral fighting a whold lot of Jovian lizards.  Unable to think of a way out, the admiral crashes the ship into one of the Chulips (a large 'vortex' that allows more jovian ships to come through). The chulip crashes onto a Martian settlement.
Under the ground,  Akito is feeding an orange to a little girl who introduces herself as I(nes,  snicker snicker)  She talks about what a nice man he is.  Suddenly  BOOM  BIG LIZARD THING COMING IN THE DOOR!  Fortunately Akito is very DUMB,  er,  brave,  and jumps onto a loading cart.  he slams the lizard thingie into the wall,  and kills it.  (YEa!  yea!)  When he turns around,  however,  even more lizards come in the back door.  Within a second Akito is the one about to be squished,  when. . .FLASH FLASH FLASH
Nergal is getting more then slightly fed up.  The military isn't able to keep the Jovian lizards off planet earth,  so Nergal takes things into their own hands.  They grab Gort and put him and the Prospector in charge of the Nadesico.  The two men are responsable for getting a crew together and heading out to stop the Jovians once and for all.
Unfortunately the Prospector isn't good at finding anything. . .not crew members,  and definitely not a good outfit.  For their helmswoman they pick a dippy secretary,  they communications expert is a former voice-actress,  and their head mechanic is better at blowing things up then putting things together.  And finally,  their pilot can't fly anything. . .unless you count his own personal Gekiganger. . .in his imagination.
Well,  guess what folks,  Akito's fine.  Sort of.  he's working as a fry cook in a little restaurant.  Unfortunately,  he's subject to spazzes and he's soon kicked out.   With nothing to do,  Akito takes to roaming the streets.
MEANWHILE. . .we are introduced to Jun Aoi.  But wait. Is Jun a boy,  or a girl?  Nobody knows. . .until we hear him talking to a DEFINITELY female voice behind the door. . .the new captain of the Nadesico,  Yurika. She is getting dressed when her father gets slightly impatient and kicks in the door,  only to discover that.. . ."My little baby's all grown up. . .and well-endowed,  too!)
Back to Akito,  who is manfully making his way up his hill,  and complaining bitterly about how cowardly his feet are.  Suddenly the car in front of him loses a suitcase which whaps him in the face.  Akito hurriedly packs up Yurika's suitcase for her (p-p-p-       ?!?!?)  And she hops in the car,  leaving behind a picture.  Curious,  Akito picks it up and sees. . .HIM?!?!?  Even more curious,  Akito spazzes and hurries off after Yurika
He is caught by the security guards while trying to board the Nadesico.  The Prospector asks him a few questions,  then hires him as the ships' cook.  While exploring the ship,  Akito stumbles upon a large. . .GEKIGANGER?  Wrong! An Aestivalis,  the mecha of Nadesico.  And inside the Aestivalis is Gai,  the "pilot" on the Nadesico.  Unfortunately,  gai's not too good,  and he immediately breaks his leg.  Akito goes into the Aestivalis to pick up Gai's most prized possession. . .a gekiganger doll.
At this point the Nadesico is attacked.  Akito panics and tries to leave . . .his only escape being to use the Aestivalis.  But the others aboard the nadesico assume that he is acting as a decoy,  not a coward,  and they cheer him on.  A short battle ensues,  and Akito ends up running back to the Nadesico,  which promptly blows up the entire Jovian fleet.  The episode ends with Akito trying to run away,  Yurika convinced that Akito wants to marry her,  and Gai complaining about Akito stealing his 'gekiganger'.
All of a sudden who should walk in the door but some really ugly guys from the United Something-or-other.  They decide to take over the Nadesico and return it to military control.  The Head Ugly Guy demands that Yurika hand over the Master Key and that she accompany him back to Earth.  Despite Gai's pleas,  Yurika agrees.  She and Jun take a ship down to Earth.
While they are on their private adventure,  the rest of the crew is stuck sitting around with nothing to do.  Bored beyond his little endurance,  Gai introduces everyone to his favorite an ow. . .GEKIGANGER!  Of course,  nobody else understands it,  especially Akito.
Meanwhile Yurika and Jun have talked to dear old Daddy.  Yurika asks him what happened to Akito's parents,  he lies,  she spazzes,  and she heads back to the ship.
As Yurika is on her way,  Akito has his own paz.  Gai's comments on Gekiganger have fired him up.  He grabs an Aestivalis and jumps out of the ship,  muttering some nonsense about rescuing the Captain so they can leave Earth and save the people on Mars.  Unfortunately,  Akito grabs a land-based model.  What does this mean?  He can't fly.  Akito spends the next few minutes trying to fly. . .and failing.  (Up and down and up and down)  Meanwhile a BIG monster comes up out of the sea.  Gai flies out in a FLYING Aestivalis,  hooks it up to Akito,  and he himself falls into the sea.  Akito proceeds to destroy the creature.  ::Yea!::   Gai is a little upset that he didn't get to help
So,  everything is back to normal and our heroes can now proceed to Mars,  right?  WRONG!  They have to get through a special shield the United Whatever has put up.  Yurika talks to the guy in charge,  but he refuses to lower the shield.  Meanwhile Akito is becoming more and more obsessed with Gekiganger.  Isn't that sad?
Jun,  who is still on earth,  decides that he will stop the Nadesico.  He gets a nano implant which enables him to fly ships and heads off to stop Yurika.
What he didn't count on,  was Gai.  Gai comes roaring at him in an Aestivalis. . .but on without weapons.  he is quickly surrounded.  Akito is called back from his journey into otakuism to save his friend.  What ends up happening is that Akito refuses to fight Jun.  How sweet.  Jun,  however,  feels no such compulsion.  In fact,  he is even more eager to fight Akito then anyone else,  due to the fact that he knows that it is Akito that Yurika has feelings for.  (One of the sweetest moments in the series is when Jun is talking to Yurika.  He asks why she is so intent on getting the Nadesico free.  Yurika replies that it is because a good captain never abandons her ship.  Jun shakes his head,  and mutters "It's because of HIM,  isn't it?")  Anyway,  Akito finally wallops Jun a good one.   The Nadesico chooses this moment to transfer all of it's energy to shields.  Minato mentions that if the United Blah-blah sends any missiles right now,  the Nadesico won't be able to avoid them.
So what happens?  the missles are sent,  duh.  And,  in a rather touching display,  Jun abruptly switches sides and moves his robot-thing in front of the nadesico,  prepared to take the blow for him.  However,  Gai and Akito wretch him away. They Nadesico happily sails through the barrier.
So,  Jun's on the ship again,  he's friends with Akito,  and Yurika still think sof him as just a friend.  But that's not how this volume ends,  oh no.  Remember those ugly guys who took over the Nadescio?  Well,  they were tied up in the back.  Key word WERE.  They escaped,  and are leaving the Nadesico in a cute little tugboat thing.   Gai notices them leaving,  says,  "Hey,  where are you guys going?"  And is promptly shot.  The end.
