Ride Report April 2, 2008 Season Opener
Do you remember the ride report for the 2007 early season? "The 2007 season began snowy and cold." Well, 2008 was no kinder to the Freewheelers. To say the weather in March was not very hospitable to road bikers would be an understatement. As a US Postal service employee might say if he was riding a bike; "Neither snow, nor rain, nor icy roads in March will keep us from their goal of hitting the road at least a couple of times before the official season opener". A few Freewheelers managed to fit in a ride or two before the first official ride in Rib Lake. Mother Nature continued her shenanigans with an April Fools snow storm dumping several inches of the white stuff across the region. Warm temperatures helped melt the snow off the roads on Wednesday which allowed a few hardy (or was it fool hardy) freewheelers to officially inaugurate the 2008 season. The southern contingent represented our club well. No Phillips or Park Falls riders ventured south. Brian Bormann, Mindy Wagner, Chris Davis and Tom and Katrina Harris from the Medford area were all present. In addition, in an extremely rare event, the illusive Blennert brothers were seen together at a FFBC gathering. That's right, both George and Russ were there. Our crack team of statisticians is still running the fact checking machine, but we are reasonably certain this is the first time the Bros have both made it to a ride in at least 666 days. The course was the traditional 102 to YY and return on C. Although the "small chain ring rule" was in place there was a sprint at the finish. Chris Davis won with the Harris tandem in second. In what could be an indication of the season to come, George Blennert took third. We can only hope that the Blennert's will be able to make additional rides this year. The next ride is planned for Phillips, at Shayne and Vickie Roberts' house. See the link for a map to their home if you need directions. Thanks to Brian for the phone in ride report.. TZ
