Season Report

The Goats again entered into the hotbed of cricket mayhem that is the Christchurch Suburban 3C competition eager for another tight competition like last year.

This season we improved one place on the point's table finishing a distant second to the eventual winners Homby, who went through the season unbeaten.

The team had a different look this year with quite a few of our regular players unavailable for either part or aR of the season due to injury or work commitments. We were able to entice three former players back to the club as well as pick up some new players to give us a steady line up.

As well as giving us the shortest season for a long time the wet weather led to some very friendly pitches which helped in our success especially before Christinas. All our regular bowlers performed well, sharing the wickets evenly and all ending with good averages.

The outstanding bowler was Ajmal who bowled with outstanding pace and control until Christmas break when he tried his hand up the grades for the club. To offset his loss we recruited John Calder out of retirement. With his pace and the three pronged swing attack of Lionel Schulte, Phil Gray and Stacy Garrett we hardly ever ended up chasing big targets. Of our five losses only one team chased our target successfully and then only won by one wicket.

Our batting (as usual) could not be described as our strength. Whie most batsmen had at least one good innings, consistency was not our strong point with the exception of Lionel Schulte who was only dismissed six times from 14 innings and was often sadly lacking hn support.

While some damp pitches contributed to the low scoring this season too many batsman failed to apply themselves on too many occasions. Richard McKernan was our best- performed batsman with three fifties and his maiden century for the club to his credit although he scored over half his total runs in his last two innings.

Our fielding was generally of a good standard with Rocky Kingi having a good year with the gloves with 15 catches and Phil Gray sharing the club award for catches in the field.

Social events for the year included John Calder's and Brad Stockton's weddings; the well attended bus trip and two cocktail parties.
