FLAG FOOTBALL RETURNS TO NEW ZEALAND
15 June 2008

Gridiron New Zealand, headed by Wayne Wright,  introduced flag football to Auckland schools in 1997 and in 2001 a league competition was formed. That same year saw GNZ and the NFL forming a joint venture to run the NFL Flag Football program in NZ schools.   Wright moved to Australia in 2002 and was involved in forming a new Sydney full contact club before returning to NZ in 2006.  After his departure to Australia, GNZ stopped playing flag and the NFL withdrew it's funding for flag in Australia and NZ. In 2008, Gridiron East was formed in Napier, NZ and Flag Football NZ rejuvenated.
