On the Spot

She doesn't know
what to say--
her mouth is frozen
and her brain is bleeding.
Can she make him forget her?
Why can't he leave her alone?
Doesn't he know that she can't take the pressure?

He sees his own soul,
nothing of hers,
so he doesn't understand
her inability to feel.
She can lie if he wants,
she can pretend she is definite,
she can lead herself to conclusions--
but what really matters?
That she says it,
or that she knows it?
