Alesi talks to DC at McLaren launch Jean Alesi is back testing for McLaren after his session at Paul Ricard in March. The Frenchman exited Formula One™ racing after thirteen years at the end of last season.

He then signed for Mercedes' DTM (German Touring Car Championship) squad. Mercedes are also a technical partner to the McLaren Formula One team and it was announced earlier this year that they would use the French Sicilian's expertise by asking him to test a modified MP4-16.

At the time Mercedes Vice-President of Motorsport Norbert Haug had said the test would be a one-off, although Alesi alluded to the possibility of there being more chances for him to work with McLaren, and he has now appeared unannounced to the press in Mugello.

Alesi originally completed a tyre test for McLaren's new partner Michelin in cold and wet conditions at Paul Ricard. During his time competing in F1™ he worked with several different tyre manufacturers, including Goodyear, Bridgestone and Michelin

He had been expected to undertake similar work in Mugello today, but has been asked to complete set-up work instead, after McLaren struggled for downforce at last weekend's San Marino GP.

The French Sicilian will not be testing for McLaren tomorrow. "I have been asked to do the testing again. I am really happy to be here but I have to go to do a straight-line test in Hockenheim tonight," he explained.

A further report on testing will be published at the end of the day.
