Maybe it’s because I’m an old fuck (ripe old age of 32), and I
was alive, and can remember, when video games first hit the scene.
My gaming ‘career’ started at the age of 8 or 9 when I was completely
blown away by Pong. Sure, To a lot of younger gamers today
(who started with 32 bit machines), It looks hokey & they might
even say it sucks without playing it; However, Pong was,
& always will be, a classic. Gameplay in its purest form. I would
play it for hours on end. It didn’t have blood & guts. It didn’t
have flashy graphics. It didn’t have a giant fucking dragon chasing
You around a three dimensional jungle. Just a ball, a couple ‘paddles’,
& like 2 sound bites (bleep & blip) - (No DMX rapping how He‘s
gonna bust a cap in Your ass) . The point is that it was fun.
We didn’t care that it wasn’t flashy. We didn’t know the hardware
totally sucked ass, compared to what would come. Does that mean
Pong isn’t still fun today? Even with high powered PC’s
& Home consoles available? Actually, it is. When You look past
the archaic graphics, it’s still a fun game.
I’m aware that technology had to evolve & I’m glad it did. I
just think a lot of gamers today are spoiled & many weren’t even
born when video games were fun, despite the shitty graphics/sound.
To many of them, if the graphics aren’t cutting edge, the game
couldn’t possibly be any fun. And the graphics aren’t cutting
edge, unless they’re fully 3D. It’s a shame too, most of these
people will never realize how awesome pen & paper games like Dungeons
& Dragons and Gamma World can be & would never even
bother with a board game like Dark Tower. Why? Because
they aren’t fancy enough…..They COULDN’T possibly be any fun,
because they’re not ‘cutting edge’. They also wouldn’t be into
a video game like Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island (SNES).
IT’s too kiddy-like. It’s not cutting edge enough. It’s not in
3D.
They’d also miss out on excellent games like Castlevania:SOTN,
Contra, Rtype 3, Shinobi, Radiant Silvergun
& the greatest game ever made - Super Metroid, because
They’re too busy with great looking, interactive movies that aren’t
a whole lot of fun to ‘play‘! Not that I give a shit if some narrow
minded, ‘fancy’ gamer misses out on some of the greatest games
ever; the problem is, the people who make games realize that if
they want to make money & feed their families, rule #1 in Game
Making Basics, is that it’s got to be fancy, it’s got to be 3D
& it’s GOT to be cutting edge!!!
That makes the chances of me getting a new, 2D Castlevania game
for my PS2, about as good as me bumping into Sarah Michelle Gellar
(& Her begging me to fuck her).
And for some damn reason that pisses me off! (both of them….cause
I’d REALLY love to bang her…anyway) - I know there are other gamers
out there who would love to see some new 2D games for their super
powered consoles The problem is that we’re in the gross minority.
Sure, we got Klonoa
2 (which was awesome…so what if it was easy!) & Contra:SS
& Rygar are on the way (apparently in all their 2D glory!)
& I’ll be first in line to buy them. I just want MORE!!! I want
some 2D side scrolling platformers, 2D fighters, RPG’s, shooters
etc.. Don’t get me wrong, I love a great 3D game as much as the
next guy….I just think there should be both!!!! I guess they’re
just not cool enough for Mr. Casual Joe gamer….But fuck Mr. Casual
Joe, lets all write & bitch to game developers & threaten to boycott
3D games, until we get some more 2D love! (lol) Thank God for
GBA!!!
(….and while we’re at it, lets do something about legalizing
marijuana.) ;)~
