This year's edition of the Dan Jensen and Bob Boden's Pure Stock Muscle Car Drag Race was a HUGE success with another record turnout of participants. 153 cars were registered for the 2007 PSMCDR. Other than being one of the COOLEST drag racing venues on the planet, I think we can partially attribute this to the excellent magazine coverage of the event and of individual cars following the 2006 PSMCDR event. We can probably look forward to more articles highlighting the PSMCDR in the upcoming magazine year. The event is becoming an "overnight sensation" after 10+ years of operation. Way to go for Dan, Bob, and all the racers!!!

The weather and mechanical breakdowns played a factor in the events over the weekend. Friday opened up with slate gray skies which promptly led to RAIN for a little over an hour. The 25-30mph headwind helped move that front along and helped to dry the track. That same head-wind would later prove a hinderance to our less than aerodynamic muscle cars!! The first car to the lanes for the warm-up qulifying sessions was Benoit Holloway (world renowned for his super burnouts) whose silver 1971 Boss351 Mustang decided to part ways with its 9" center section. After blasting the housing to smitereens, Benoit went with true racer fashion and rounded up a used local 9" housing, swapped his gears into it, and still had a couple hours to spare for some qualifying passes in the afternoon!! His pit was a bee hive of thrashing and helping hands from fellow racers. The big news of the qualifying session was that there were three cars again in the 11's!! One of which was Pete Simpson with his ZL-1 COPO Camaro FINALLY breaking into the 11's after a number of years at the 12.02-12.03-12.01 threshold! One of the neatest things to be seen over the weekend was the staging of these two old Fords running side by side for a feature article to come soon from the pen of long-time PSMCDR supporter Tom Shaw. We had the pleasure to witness Frank Rice's 1957 Ford Custom 300 with a McCullough super charged 312/300hp against Brian Stefina's 1958 Mercury Monterey with a tri-power fed 430/400hp.

Saturday morning dawned clear and a little cooler than Friday. 34 degrees was the morning temperature outside the hotel in Edmore! THIRTY-FOUR flippin' DEGREES!! Definate "frost on the pumpkin" weather. The "air" improved dramatically as well. Friday's adjusted altitude (acording to the Bob K. camp) was 1800' above sea level. Saturday's cooler air gave a reading of only 43' above sea level!! Everybody was jetting up their carbs in the morning. But Saturday didn't pass without explosive drama either. Ken Reibel's killer 1966 427 StingRay spit out a half shaft during the morning warm-ups. Who said that launching on bias-ply tires was soft on the rear gears???
One fifth of the field was running in the 12's and 11's!! Three cars were in the elite 11 second time zone! The field (except for my car) seems to be getting quicker from year to year.

There were a number of cool cars in the spectator parking area as well. A couple of Canadian Beaumonts, a 1970 Rebel Machine, a couple of Mopar Wing cars, and a 1962 Studebaker diesel powered flat bed truck! There was also an interesting story involving the 1967 Hemi Dodge R/T that had 3300 original miles(!) and had been bought from a Dodge Chrysler Car Dealership/hardware store/farming implement dealer in Chesaning, Michigan. This R/T Hemi Coronet had no problems running a 12.33 @ 117.23mph! And don't forget the SEVEN (count 'em- seven) A12 Mopar lift-off hood cars at the event too.

As for action out in the grass pits.........My GTS struggled with an ignition problem that kept me fouling plugs. I went thru three sets of plugs for only a total of 8 passes. The best I could manage was a 14.09 @ 97.06. I hoped for better results on Saturday, but I slowed down to the 14.47 and a 14.26. A number of other racers were on the verge of breaking out with the denser Saturday air. A fair number of racers also established personal BEST times on that day!! Congrats to Donny Braspennickx(1966 StingRay L-79), Chris Jones (1970 Torino SCJ 428), and Paul Vitale (1967 Impala SS427) to name a few.
The good news is that my "new" 2000 Ford F250 tow rig delivered an impressive 10 1/2 MPG towing the GTS as opposed to my old Ram1500's 6-7 mpg. That Ford V-10 made it an easy chore. Only two tanks of gas instead of the usual three!
We also had a number of new race fans in our pits with Ty and Keli Taccone's little Jesse coming along, and Jon and Marci Rosenberger's Jaden making a repeat appearance! We have to start them young!!

My shoot-out match up was with Jim Parcella's 1973 Buick Centurion 455 Stage 1 convertible. Let's just say that Jim mopped up the track with my little 340 GTS! That huge Buick can spit out some decent 60' times for a car that size!! I spun the tires for the first round at the start, so I tried to shave the tree a little close for the second round and I lit the red bulb! Down in flames in two rounds. We were missing a few of our regulars in the grass pit area with Steve and Cindy Hodges attending their son's graduation from the USMC boot camp in San Diego. But there were the usual group of regulars out there. Rusty Small and his Dad came up from Kansas but without Rusty's Hurst Olds. Ty Taccone and his silver 1970 Z-28, Lon Siegworth and his Platinum 6bbl 440 Road Runner, Mark Barker and his black 1970 SS396 Chevelle, Darren Phillips and his 1970 green Buick GS350, and Joe Cass with his orange 442. Venerable PSMCDR racer Dave Heilala stopped by to show off his new deck of Hillary Clinton playing cards! LOL! Good friends Dave and Korlyn, Gord and Joan, Bob and his buddy Paul (Studebaker fans), Brad Budzen with his video camera, and Harold and Eric with their daughters Hannah and Marisa. Karen and I want to THANK all the folks who helped out with the food, set-up and clean-up out there! We also learned a valuable lesson regarding the proper fastening of an old, cold tonneau cover. It takes at least five guys to snap it down.

But enough of my rambling on, let's turn to the race day photos!!! THANKS to a number of friends who had their cameras at the ready both days. And a BIG THANKS to my buddy Dave DeCoster who shot almost all of the race day pairings as they came down the 1/4 mile. Sorry if Dave didn't get EVERY pair!!

RACE RESULTS SPREAD SHEET FOUND HERE!! CLICK HERE!!!

This is the complete race spec sheet for Windows Excel for every entrant for the 2007 PSMCDR. Print it out and follow along with the photos to put the names with the cars and with their time slips!!

For those without Excel, here are the sheets set to .JPG format. There are three separate pages for this format, and I'm sorry if the third round is cut short. That is all that would fit on my scanner bed!!
