COURSE OUTLINE

Mr. Roberts

Room 25

The grade twelve physics course provides a solid preparation for university in the areas of: Forces and Motion; Energy and Momentum; Electric, Gravitational and Magnetic Fields; Wave Nature of Light; and Matter-Energy Interface . Student learning will include scientific theory and investigations into each of these areas.

All students taking this grade twelve course will be assessed and evaluated in the same manner.  Students will have the following mark breakdown given to them and explained to them on the first day of classes.  We ask that you read this course outline yourself and then sign the bottom where it is indicated.

Evaluative components are :

Knowledge and Understanding                                            35%

Thinking/Inquiry                                                                   35%

Communication                                                                    15%

Application                                                                          15%

Total                                                                                   100%

Topics to studied

            Forces and Motion                                               22 H

            Energy and Momentum                                         22 H

Electric, Gravitational and Magnetic Fields                22 H

Wave Nature of Light                                           22 H

            Matter-Energy Interface                                         22 H

            Total                                                                110 H

Classroom Expectations

a.      A three ring binder is require for the keeping of notes and handouts

b.      Formal notes and evaluations are to be done in pen.

c.       Scientific calculator is required by all students

d.      Notes will be assessed.

e.      Student planner is to accompany student to each class.

f.        Homework to be identified on the board or other convenient means.

* Additional directions concerning notes and evaluation on “Science Notes” page.

STUDENT EVALUATION

1.         Homework is assigned on a regular basis, usually several times a week.  Whether homework is specifically                              assigned or not you should review your notes every night.

2.         Term mark 70% and exam 30%.

3.         Student participation in discussion and lesson development is expected.

KUTICA – an acronym for Knowledge/Understanding, Thinking/Inquiry, Communication and Application

All of these areas will be assessed and evaluated, within the context of the course. Emphasis will be placed on K/U in regular classroom activities. T/I will be instrumental in the challenges the students must complete as a part of the class curriculum, C will be assessed on an ongoing basis ( based on classroom responses and student interactions as well as written responses) and A will be evaluated based on the labs done in class as well as challenges and the final practical exam.

In all cases multiple opportunities will be given to the student to demonstrate they have mastered the course expectations as outlined by the ministry.

Fees : 1. Replacement costs of any equipment damaged due to carelessness or horseplay will be assigned to the                         individual responsible.

2. Damage to textbooks.

CLASSROOM BEHAVIOUR

Three Governing Rules :

1.   Respect people, property and the right to learn of others.

2.   Be in the right place at the right time

3.   Have all school work done on time

Attendance

After 5 absences from class, the student will meet with the teacher to discuss the absences and the reason for them as well as any remediation that may be required.

Missed Tests and Labs

Students will write missed tests or make up missed labs within 3 days of returning to school.  This work will be done on their own time not class time.  Both missed tests and missed labs will be assessed a mark of 0 until they are made up.  If the test or assignment is not made up, the mark of 0 will stand.

Additional Assignments: Additional assignments may be provided in instances where a students mark does not accurately reflect their ability/completion of the course.

Additional Help: I will be available for additional help before school and after school when possible. I usually arrive before 8:00 am and will likely be in rm.25. It is advisable that whenever possible you make arrangements in advance to meet with me at this time as there are always things to do before the beginning of the day.

Further to this the students will be shown a web page produced specifically for this course that has additional information as well as an email address and forum where they can post messages to me after school or on weekends and get responses from both me and other students.

Students will be both evaluated by the above guidelines and assessed regularly.
