A Message to All Our 1966 Classmates

RE:  MAJOR 1966 Class Fund Fundraising

Dear Classmates:

Once again, here we are with a broad appeal to all our 1961-1966 classmates.   Next year being our 40th, it is now time to start up a major fundraiser to arrive closer to the final goal of raising $11,000 or more, to meet $25,000 Principal for our Fund.  (Earnings amounts do not count in the principal amount.)

Dedication:

The Committee would like to dedicate this fundraiser in memory of our dear Ernie Hoffman, who also served with us, and to the memory of all other 27 known deceased class members from 1966 to present.

Since the Committee began its work in 2001, a number of you have sent in donations and some of you donated again and again.  Your donations have all been greatly appreciated.

Chair’s message is being sent with the following attachments:

a)  listing of our known deceased classmates.  May each rest in peace.

b)  listing of names of 2001-2005 class donors.

c)  current Class Fund Chart, thanks to Allan Fraenkel.

(2 identical charts).   You can open in either MsWord .doc

or  .pdf formats, depending on your computer's capability.

d) article on the Class of 1966 which appeared in the Gallaudet Today

publication during Spring 2004 that praises our Class for its benevolent

    support of Gallaudet students.

A Word about Our Class Earnings:

At its highest point in 2004 our earnings (before any disbursements were made) were at $7300 after becoming endowed years ago.   The Fund was required to 'spend down', because its earnings had accumulated with each quarter.

The first earnings distributions in 2004 were for two $500 awards for two scholar/athletes - one male and one female.

In 2005, due to strict intercollegiate rules, the awards were changed to six (6) $150 awards to scholar/athletes.

In addition, we have disbursed $2500 in ten (10) financial aid awards for the 2004-05 academic year.    Another $2500 in unexpended earnings will be given for ten financial aid awards for the 2005-06 academic year.    Then, the remaining earnings balance will be around $900 with $14,000 in principal.

Kudos to our great Class of 1966!

The Class of 1966 is in the unique position of being one of only four (4) class funds managed by Gallaudet’s Office of Development.   These are the Classes of 1940, 1947, 1966 and 1971.

A Word regarding the $25,000 Principal Amount:

The Committee hopes that this 2005 appeal will bring us much closer to the final hurdle to attain $25,000 in principal so that quarterly interest payments of 1% of the principal ($250 X 4 quarters = $1000 earnings) will be allocated to our Fund after the $25,000 goal has been reached, to make awards to honor our annual commitments.  Earnings (interest) must be spent down, per new IRS regulations, so we must give away the earnings received each year.

Class Plea:

Won’t you help make a big difference and join Rae, Al, Lois and Jini in making your 2005 donation?  If each of our 95 registered Yahoo c’mates sends in a $100 check, we will have attained very close to our $11,000 goal!  We will acknowledge donors’ names from time to time.    Thanks much!

Acting President Rae, in her recent class message,  has suggested each of us also donate $100 in 2006 to get us close to, and over the $25,000 top!

Al and Jini will be at the Deaf Seniors of America Conference luncheon at Lori's Diner and would be happy to answer any questions those attending may have.

2005 Donation Deadline:   November 30, 2005

If you would like to be recognized as a Class 1966 donor, please send your check, payable to Class of 1966 Athlete/Scholar Fund, to:

Virginia Borggaard, Class 1966 Acting Chair,

2453 Bear Den Rd., Frederick, MD 21701

NOTE: Checks sent directly to Gallaudet’s Office of Development will not be counted in the Class Fund, because Gallaudet does not share donor information with our committee.
