ANTIQUE METAL HORSES
Prancing Western Horse
This gorgeous old horse stands 7.5" tall and was made in the mid-1940's by K.&O. Co.  The saddle is not removeable, and the original reins are sort of a shoelace material painted with a brown vinyl-type coating.
This horse is the same exact make and mold as above, but is the "painted" version done in white with black saddle.  All paint is original to this piece.  The saddle also has various painted accents but this horse is missing his original reins.
Belgian Draft Horse
This little guy stands about 4.25" tall and appears to date to the late 1930's or 40's based on the design and manufacture type.  This horse is unmarked, but one that was nearly identical to it was listed on eBay recently with a "Made by Dodge Co." stamp.  Very heavy for his small size, and I feel that the detail and style of this piece is very similar to the work of Gladys Brown.
Lying Down Horse
This Chinese-type lying down horse is made of bronze and sits 2.5" tall.  He has what looks like a hand-made engraved marking underneath of the number "8" with one end flattened.  I was told that this came from the attic of an old general store that was being sold.  I liked the unusual positioning of this horse.  Age is unknown, but guessing maybe 1950's-1960's?
My Grandfather's Trophy
This great old trophy stands 5.75" including the base, and reads "Bailey's Trophy, 1939, Won By Bob Klicka".  I have been told that this is one of the earliest dated Gladys Brown pieces that has been seen.  My Grandpa won this in his riding club "The Suburban Troopers" back in Illinois.  We have lots of very old pictures of him riding in the club, but unfortunately could not locate a photo of him holding this trophy.
Standing Morgan Horse
This awesome horse stands 8.5" tall including the base, and is signed "Estes Tarter" with a copyright mark on the left side as shown.  Dates to somewhere between the late 1940's to mid 1950's. The long mane that you cannot see in the photo on the opposite side of the neck is sculpted as if it were flying back in the wind.
Tiny "Primitive" Horse
This little guy only stands about 2" tall.  He is marked with an unreadable circular mark underneath that may be a copyright? Age is unknown, but I have seen one other like him in an antique store.  The standing mane is quite unusual.  This tiny horse is also extremely heavy for his small size.
Standing Western Horse #1
This clean horse stands about 7.25" tall and is marked "MCA copyright 1947" underneath.  Designed by Gladys Brown.  The saddle is a separate piece of metal but is permanently attached to the horse.
Wild Horse Bookends
This absolutely gorgeous pair of Mustangs was sculpted by none other than the very talented Gladys Brown.  These have a "Made by Dodge" sticker underneath, and they are also stamped "Gladys Brown, copyright 1948" on the back of each one.  These are very difficult to find, since their production was discontinued because the owner of Dodge company thought these horses looked way too "mean".
Standing Western Horse #2
This horse stands about 6" tall and is unmarked.  He still has his original copper metal reins, and is extremely heavy and highly detailed.  Probably dates to the 1940's.  Looks very similar to horses by Abbotware.
Western Standing Arabian
This horse stands about 6.75" tall and is another unmarked Gladys Brown.  It is solid and very heavy.  The original reins have been replaced with chain and the saddle is removeable with metal "latigo" ties.  Likely dates to around 1947.
Cast Iron Jumping Horse
This really neat horse stands about 7.5" tall and is only marked by the cryptic foundry marks as shown in the photos to the right.  I was told when I purchased it that it was from the 1920's, though it's country of origin is unknown.  If you have any information on this horse, could you please
e-mail me here?  Thank you.
Morgan Horse Bookends
This is another beautiful old pair of Gladys Brown bookends.  They are stamped "Gladys Brown, copyright 1946" on the back of each one, though they no longer have their paper "Made by Dodge" labels underneath.
Wild Tail Horse
This is a little metal horse that stands 3.25" tall and is stamped copyright "JB" (for Jennings Brothers) underneath.  I am not sure if it is made of brass or pot metal with some sort of gold spray?  I tend to think it might be polished brass, as the discolored areas appear to be deeply ingrained, and there is no flaking of the finish whatsoever.
Lying Down Foal
This is the lying foal "head up" version by Gladys Brown.  It sits just 2" tall and is made of pot metal with the typical bronze/copper wash finish.
Large Hubley Horse
This is a large 7 3/4" cast iron (magnet sticks) standing stallion that was made by the old Hubley company.  These were sold in the mid to late 1940's and came in a few different colors.  This particular horse appears to have been repainted at some point in it's long life, but I recognized it in with a group of cheaper pot metal horses that were for sale all together and for the super-cheap price I just couldn't pass it up!  With original paint, these typically sell on eBay for anywhere between $50 and $150.
Large Rearing Horse
This is another beauty by the famous Gladys Brown Edwards.  Standing almost 11" tall without the base, this horse is large, heavy and substantial.  This horse dates to the mid-1940's, likely sometime prior to 1948.  I say that because the Wild Horse bookends done by Gladys Brown in 1948 had the anatomy of the front teeth portrayed correctly, but in this horse the front teeth are incorrect (i.e. the teeth go all the way back with no space between the front and back teeth as they should be).  I am guessing this is something Gladys Brown may have learned later on in her sculpting career as she studied the horse's head more carefully in preparing to create the Wild Horse bookends.
Small Bucking Horse with Cowboy
This tiny little souvenir-type horse stands about 3.5" tall and is marked "Trophy Craft" underneath.  It is extremely heavy for it's small size.
Silver or Chrome Rearing Horse
This horse stands about 7" tall without the base, and is not marked.
Lying Foal
This newboarn foal is made of pewter and sits about 2" tall.  It is stamped underneath as "Hudson Pewter", and has a number 851 and is also marked U.S.A.
Walking Horse
This horse stands exactly 5" tall without the base.  It was made by Trophy Craft, Inc. and just like the other horse figurines of this type it was likely made around the late 1940's.
