I, Robot
Isaac Asimov

Three Laws of Robotics, simple and interacting to make robots behave in peace with humans. They are funny stories, subtle, beginning by I, Robot and the gentle but smart Susan Calvin.

The Laws of Robotics:

  • First Law: a robot may not injure a human being, or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
  • Second Law: a robot must obey orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
  • Third Law: a robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

It is impossible to reach such a high level if your name is not Asimov. The technology behind robots is hinted at: positronic brains made of metal. But then Asimov invades the issues that robots are for us in sociological terms, without blaming technique, but rather focusing on how humans react with basic and often unjustifiable reasons, and as we proceed, we find that robots put to the test our values - that which in fact makes us human.
