The History of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc.
Sigma Gamma Rho was founded on November 12, 1922 in Indianapolis, IN. This elegent Sorority was established at Butler University, which is a predomently white university.
Sigma Gamma Rho was started by seven strong and intelligent black women, Mary Lou Allison Gardener Little, Dorothy Hanely Whiteside, Vivian White Marbury, Nannie Mae Gahn Johnson, Hattie Mae Dulin Redford, Bessie Mae Downey Martin and Cubena McClure. Each founder accomplished to make Sigma Gamma Rho the Illustrious Sorority that it is today.
Starting with the Alpha Chapter which was chartered at Bulter University with about 20 members in 1924, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. stands stronger than ever with over 400 chapters and over 80,000 sisters in this new millenium.
Despite being the last sorority to be created (of the Divine Nine), Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. is clear to show they are truly the best designed. With each step we take, we prove to live up to our motto..."Greater Service, Greater Progress".
