I. Purchase of Vitamins/Supplements Through the Internet1. In line with progress, people nowadays are increasingly health-conscious. Using health foods has become part of everyday life. Vitamins, fish oil capsules, nutritional supplements, ginkgo biloba extract and bone health supplements etc are much demanded products. Purchase of these products in Hong Kong costs much more than in foreign countries, such as in UK and Canada. We wish to bring members’ attention to a UK supplier “Healthspan” at <http://www.healthspan.co.uk>. Apart from using it as a reference for price comparison, members may also place on-line orders and perhaps saving a few dollars in this respect. [Note : For delivery to UK, purchasers enjoy free post and packaging. For other parts of the world, a small amount for post and packing will be charged (£2 for Europe; and £4 for Hong Kong and other countries). ]

II. Drug Education Resources Centre (DERC)2. Following the incessant pace of medical development, Hong Kong people’s demand for health knowledge and medicine information is ever-growing. The Drug Education Resources Centre is an independent and non-profit making organization under the Hong Kong Hospital Professional Pharmacists Association. With the efforts of the local pharmacist volunteers, a first-ever Chinese website was built to provide a highly convenient platform for knowledge on drugs and other related health information. 3. All information shown in the website, including “Drugs”, “Diseases”, “Drug Administration”, “Dosage”, “Drug Identification” etc, are all professionally screened before publication. With constant updating also, the contents are consistently made accurate and multifarious. This provides readers with neutral and fair drug information, also educating patients and their families on the proper ways to use and to select drugs. 4. The webpage on “Drug Administration” is designed to teach people the proper ways to use drugs in order to bring about the best healing effect. The other pages on “Latest News” and “Medical and Research Reports” highlight the most up-to-date medical news and research results. These keep the readers abreast of the most recent developments as well as encourage active discussion among patients. 5. The webpage on “Drug Identification” shows live item pictures to guide readers, thereby enabling the latter to easily recognize the drugs they are taking. It also transcribes articles written by pharmacists on newspapers. 6. This Chinese website can be accessed by clicking <http://www.derchk.org>.

III. Correspondence List7. Recently some members suggested that a correspondence list should be published to facilitate communication among fellow members. To work towards that end, we append a questionnaire to check with individual members on whether or not they would agree to have their personal information published on the list. V. HKFISSA Activities Monthly Activities 10. August 17 saw the visit to the Hong Kong Museum of Coastal Defence in the morning with 20 members participating. There was torrential rainfall that day. Visit was made to the Reception Area where old military vehicles and cannons were on display. Time was also spent on the Redoubt area where the standing exhibition "600 Years of Coastal Defence in Hong Kong” was staged. The bad weather conditions resulted in closure of the Historical Trail where batteries, underground magazines and a torpedo station were exhibited. Thereafter, the group had lunch together in Hang Fa Chuen, enjoying a cheerful chat over tea and dim sum. 11. The September outing will be held on 14th (Wednesday). It will be a "Sunset Stroll" in Repulse Bay and Deep Water Bay, anticipated to be a romantic and leisurely walk along the southern coastline as a prelude to Mid-Autumn Festival on the 11th day of the eighth moon of the lunar calendar. Please refer to details at the page on Activities on our website. 12. The next activity will be a visit to the Buddha Statue and Po Lin Monastery in Lantau on 12 October 2005.
