Our growing and collection started more than 20 years ago with a simple and small orchid plantation. It was not so until 1993 when the commercial activity took name.

Orquideario "La Paphinia" was a useful name to identify us in the international shows.

Our priority were the orchids but when we saw to preserve them alone in a reconstructed environment its conservation would be a failure. It was in 2000 that my father had the idea to make ex situ conservation by means of the design of a nourished garden with shrubs, epiphytes, some fruit plants and another natives that grow in the same orchid's ecosystem, being therefore the beginning of this project.

All the effort, development, reached and acquired experience would not have been possible if my father had not known the orchids, by this I have bear in mind to describe whole the most significant actions since his childhood to our days .

Thanks to this hobby in 1995 by his influence I got in into the wonderful world of the orchids, so starting a new era what served as a impulse to learn and improve through the cooperation what we have practiced.

Here is a recount of the most prominent actions through our history:

 

   07/10/1954  Marco was born in Sanguillin, province of Loja, Ecuador.

             1965 When he was a child in his hikes around Macara, province of Loja, discovered the beauty  

                            and misticism of the blooming orchids such as:  

                            Stanhopea jenisiana, Catasetum macroglossum, Cattleya maxima, and others.

         1969 After a growings lack and shortage, he had to migrate with his family to the beautiful and rich in 

                            biodiversity, province of Zamora-Chinchipe; establishing specifically in Cumbaratza.

         1970 During the journey through the Nangaritza river valley, in companion with a teacher as a tutor, rediscovered  

                           his love for orchids.

         1982 Marco married to Marianita Leon and his passion by orchids came true starting with his first cultivation.

         1983 Year in what we bought the land of the today's botanical garden where my father sowed his first plants and 

                           trees for an orchid growing.

         1986 Marco took part in his first international orchid show in Guayaquil.

         1987 In this year his knowledge about Taxonomy of orchids increased thanks to the friendship obtained from the 

                           U.S. citizen Dennis D'Alessandro; a well-known orchid discoverer of many species from Southern  

                           Ecuador.

         1988 Marco received the Horticultural Merit from the American Orchid Society by the exhibition of a lovely specimen of  

                           Huntleya lucida in Guayaquil.

                           In the same year Marco becames member for first time of the well-known American Orchid Society.

             1993 The commercial activity took name with:

                           Orquideario "La Paphinia"

                          The first manuscripts of the book Orchids of Zamora-Chinchipe are made.

9-25/10/1994 Participation in an international show in Quito.

             2000  Beginning and design of the botanical garden project, spreading our ex-situ conservation level to another                             family plants.

    10/11/2000 Marco made deserving of the merit to the most outstanding citizen in the scientific ambit by his                             undeniable work in favour of the province orchids.

21-24/02/2001 Participation in the international show "Orchids Unlimited" in Quito.

             2000  The wall construction of the botanical garden started.

   10/11/2003  Marco received for second time the scientific merit of the province.

 5-8/02/2004  Participation in the "Quito Orchid Show", at the city of the same name.

  06/02/2004  Official launching on the Internet of the Jardín Botánico "Marco Jimenez" website.

  02/03/2004  Our wall was victim of a vile attack carried out by a group of wicked people.

Nuestra Historia

Nuestro cultivo y colección inicio hace más de 20 años con una pequeña y sencilla plantación de orquídeas. No fue que hasta el año 1993 cuando la actividad comercial tomo nombre:

Orquideario "La Paphinia" nos sirvió para identificarnos en las exposiciones internacionales.

Nuestra prioridad fueron las orquídeas pero al darnos cuenta que al tratar de conservarlas solas en un ambiente natural reconstruido, su preservación seria un fracaso. Fue en el año 2000 que mi padre tuvo la idea de hacer conservación ex situ mediante el diseño de un nutrido jardín con arbustos, epifitas, algunos frutales y otras plantas nativas que crecen en la mismo ecosistema de las orquídeas, dando así el puntapié inicial para este proyecto.

Todo el  esfuerzo, desarrollo, la experiencia adquirida y alcanzada no seria posible si mi padre no hubiera conocido las orquídeas, por eso he tomado en cuenta narrar los hechos más sobresalientes desde su infancia hasta nuestros días.

Gracias a esta afición en el año de 1995 por medio de su influencia yo ingrese en el maravilloso mundo de las orquídeas, iniciando así una nueva era que nos sirvió como impulso para aprender y mejorar mucho más por medio de la cooperación y ayuda que hemos practicado.

 07/10/ 1954 Marco nace en Sanguillín, provincia de Loja, Ecuador

        1965 Cuando niño en sus caminatas por Macará, provincia de Loja, descubrió la belleza y el misticismo de las   

                          orquídeas en flor tales como: Stanhopea jenisiana, Catasetum macroglossum, Cattleya maxima.

        1969 Después de una escasez y pérdida de cultivos tuvo que migrar con su familia a la paradisíaca y biodiversa

                          provincia de Zamora-Chinchipe, estableciéndose específicamente en Cumbaratza.

        1970 En el trayecto por el valle del río Nangaritza cuando acompaño a un maestro como tutor, redescubrió su

                          amor por las orquídeas.

        1982 Marco contrae matrimonio con Marianita León y su pasión por las orquídeas se hace realidad al iniciar     

                         con su primer cultivo.

        1983 Año en el que adquirimos el terreno de lo que hoy es el actual jardín botánico donde mi padre sembró sus   

                         primeras plantas y árboles para un orquideario.

        1986 Marco participa en su primera exposición internacional de orquídeas en Guayaquil.

        1987 En este año su conocimiento sobre Taxonomía de orquídeas se incrementa gracias a la amistad y ayuda

                         obtenidas del estadounidense Dennis D'Alessandro; reconocido descubridor de muchas especies del sur 

                         del Ecuador.

        1988 Marco recibe el Merito de Horticultura de la American Orchid Society por la exhibición de un bello

                         espécimen de Huntleya lucida en Guayaquil.

                         En ese mismo año Marco se convierte por primera vez en socio de la conocida organización internacional

                         American Orchid Society.

        1993 La actividad comercial tomo nombre con: Orquideario “La Paphinia”

                         Se realizan los primeros manuscritos del libro “Orquídeas de Zamora-Chinchipe”

9-25/10/ 1994 Participación en exposición internacional en Quito.

         1995 Año en el que yo adquirí la afición por las orquídeas y la ecología.

                           Participación en exposición internacional en Guayaquil.

         1997 Participación en exposición internacional en Cuenca

 

         2000 Inicio y diseño del proyecto jardín botánico, extendiéndose nuestro rango de conservación ex situ a otras

                           familias de plantas.

                           Redescubrimiento de Dodsonia falcata.

   10/11/2000 Marco se hace merecedor del merito al ciudadano más destacado en el ámbito científico por su  

                           innegable trabajo a favor de las orquídeas de la provincia.

21-24/02/ 2001 Participación en la exposición internacional “Orchids Unlimited” en Quito.

 

           2003 Se inicia la construcción del cerramiento del jardín botánico.

       10/11/2003 Marco recibe por segunda ocasión el merito científico de la provincia.

     5-8/02/2004 Participación en la exposición Quito Orchid Show, en la ciudad del mismo nombre.

       06/02/2004 Lanzamiento del sitio oficial en Internet del Jardín Botánico “Marco Jiménez”

       02/03/2004 Nuestro cerramiento fue victima de un vil atentado perpretado por un grupo de personas inescrupulosas.
