| The 2002
tournament is over and was our best fishing day to date. The winning
team on "The Sand Flea" with Captain Rob Hendrix, Andy
Bessio and John Kranick caught two Bull Dolphin weighing 29 & 35
pounds for 192 points . Their catch crushed the old winning record
of 48 points previously owned by "Signal 20". 2nd place
for the 2nd year in a row went to "The Drunken Mick" with Captain
Martyn Kolleda and 1st mate Anthony Venezia with 39 pts of Dolphin.
3rd place went to John & Jonathan Ondrejack on the "Sea
Boss" with 34 pts of Dolphin & Kingfish.
"The Sand Flea" a 17' Montauk Boston Whaler was trolling skirted Ballywhoo about 15 miles off Boca when they hooked about a 20 pound cow. While keeping the smaller dolphin near the boat they saw a big Bull dolphin with her. The cow managed to get off before anything else was hooked, but they made up for it by boating two Bull Dolphin that were with the cow. Both Dolphin were caught with spinning rods and 12 pd test. The last Bull was boated at 11:50 and "The Sand Flea" had to race back to the weigh in against the wind, current and lack of gas. |
The small boats dominated the tournament this year with two 17 ft boats taking 1st and 2nd place and a 15 ft boat taking 4th. Here are the top 5 boats:
