Mr. Deeds

Movie Rating-**1/2

Cast&Crew-Adam Sandler(Longfellow Deeds), Winona Ryder(Babe), Peter Gallagher(Chuck Cedar), and Director Steven Brill .

In Adam Sandler's new comedy Mr.Deeds he plays Longfellow Deeds, a likeable small town chap who inherits 40 billion dollars when his uncle dies. This remake of Frank Capra's classic Mr. Deeds goes to town is only a passable homage to the great film at best but it is a slice of comedy heaven compared to Little Nicky and Big Daddy.

Once Chuck Cedar, the uncle's second in line to the fortune, finds out about Deeds he invites him to come to New York with him. When local smut t.v. shows find about the city's newest billionaire they plot too get the scoop on the newcomer. While in NYC Deeds is hunted down by a pretty young reporter named Babe. In this role Ms. Sticky Hands, I mean Winona Ryder, is charming and loveable. As they get closer, worse things begin to happen as Deeds is shown on tv in compromising situations. He begins to feel uncomfortable and eventually leaves when he finds out Babe is just using him to get a story for her Hard Copy-esqe tv show. Seeing her error, Babe goes to Deeds hometown, Mandrake Falls,N.H., and convinces him that she loves him and that he should go back to the city. Deeds does just in time to stop Cedar from inheriting the heirloom.

Adam Sandler is just not funny in this movie. Maybe Winona Ryder stole his sense of humor while she was on set. In fact, if you combined Al "The Bore" Gore and Bob "I Need Some Viagra" Dole you would get something funnier than Sandler is in this film. He relies too heavily on physical gags, such as beating various people up, having the butler drive a metal stake into his foot, and hitting Cedar with a tennis ball in the groin. He plays the sweet, loveable and in a way aloof Deeds well though just without being funny.

I found this movie likeable but as I mentioned above the star is devoid of humor. It has a nice plot, small town guy strikes it big in the city, and the supporting characters especially Emilio the butler(John Tuturro) and Crazy Eyes(Steve Buscemi) are very funny. If your looking for something light and carefree, Mr. Deeds is a good pick.
