The story starts out with an ex-soilder, Cloud, who has became an mercenary. He joins an undercover operation called Avalanche. Runned by Barret and his group of rebels, they are out to thwart the plans of Shinra Corporation. Shinra is an evil fighting force which disagrees with everything that the Avalanche does. Then, their problem is Sephiroth, a super-human Jenova clone, which is off to destroy the world.

They are out to thwart the plans of the Shinra Corporation, the evil fighting force which just seems to disagree with everything that the Avalanche does. Eventually, the plot switches over to catching Sephiroth, a Jenova clone, which seems to be bent on destroying the Earth.
