DIY setup t@nk with double filtration capabilities using one powerhead! Side view of Filter setup!

Plan view of filter setup!

q       Mechanical Filtration:

Ø      Filter floss: removes solid particles from the water, has to be changed every 1-2 weeks.

Ø      Sponge: beneficial bacteria will settle on the filter media.

ü      Here we employ the sponge & wool as media to trap the waste materials.

q       Chemical Filtration:

Ø      Active carbon (removes foul smell)

Ø      Algone (Prevention of algae outbreaks triggered by high nutrient levels)

Ø      Zeolite (removal of nitrate/nitrite/ammonia- will disrupt biological cycle)

ü      Here we have the activated carbon to reduce the amount of foul smell.

q       Biological Filtration:

Ø      Beneficial bacteria: Transforming ammonia to nitrite, and nitrite to nitrates.

Ø      Bacteria thrive on stones, gravel, filter media, sand, bio-balls with a constant good supply of oxygen.

ü Here the beneficial bacteria grows on the sponge, floss, bio-balls. (takes about 2 weeks to grow initially)
