Angler's Reviews

Holwell Hyde (or The Pit to locals) is a nice little venue for some good fishing in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire.

Situated about 5-10 minutes from the town centre it has provided me with many, many hours of pleasure.

The gravel pit is fairly small, but very well stocked with a lot of Carp, (mainly Common, but a good few Mirrors also), Bream, Tench, Roach,
Rudd, Perch, Pike and there are rumours of a Catfish and possibly even an Eel, although I have never seen one of the latter two caught.

My personal bests from the water are a 26lb Mirror Carp and a 17.5lb Pike (caught whilst carping on a fishy pellet).

The lake carp record is in the region of 32lb and I am told it is a Common and that it is often spotted in the margins.

The lake has a channel upon entering which is rarely fished but is often worth a cast as the carp move all over the lake.
There are two islands on the lake with a gravel bar between them.  These are the main features on the
lake but there are also some overhanging trees, which prove very productive at times.

The lake fishes well early in the morning and late afternoon as well as through the night.  In the main part of the day it can be slow, but it
is non-stop for Roach, Perch and Bream on the pole.  Best baits for the lake are maggots, pellets and bright coloured boilies, although pretty much
any bait will get you a catch.

Basically this is what I would call a confidence lake because you are always in with a good shout of a fish.

The only downside to this venue is it can occasionally be overrun with noisy kids, especially at weekends and during school holidays, but dont let
this put you off it is definitely worth a cast.
