Fish Profile
Swordtails are quiet a stunning fish. The males have long swords on their tails (hence the name) and appear very commanding in a community aquarium. These fish eat a typical diet for tropical fish and fair well in community tanks with large tetras and other livebearing species. An easy fish to breed, this species is livebearing. Fry should be placed in their own tank to protect them from other fish (including the parents).
What they eat: Tropical fish flakes, and micro betta pellets are good staple foods. Algae wafers are a special treat.
Where they like to be: Swordtails swim at all levels of the aquarium. They tend to be very curious, so be careful when cleaning your aquarium so you dont inadvertently squish them.
Who they like to be with: These fish are a bit more territorial than most community fish, however once these fish settle boundary disputes they make very good tankmates for most tetras and livebearing fish. Ideal tankmates include Penguin Tetras, Silver Dollars, Mollies, Cherry Barbs, and White Tetras. Swordtails can be aggressive toward smaller fish such as Glow Light Tetras, Neon Tetras, and even Guppies.
How many to buy: Swordtails seem to do find alone in a community aquarium, however a male and a female or two would probably be an ideal combination.
