Stowting Trout Lake

Fishing was allegedly "slow" when I arrived although plenty of fish could be seen in the margins and showing occasionally elsewhere on the lake. There appeared to be two places the fish were holding, almost on the bottom and approx. 12 to 24 inches under the surface, in either case they were very hard to tempt. Fishing from next to the boat jetty, in desperation, both from my dire casting ability and the lack of interest from the fish, I decided to try a small dry fly with almost instant results. I made a fairly lazy cast, parallel to the bank and only a rod length away from the bank I'd cast along, I retrieved about a foot of line to sink a recalcitrant leader and let it sit for a moment while I fetched my net from about 6 feet away. No sooner had I put the rod on the grass than a fish turned almost under the fly, rose in the water and snaffled the Red Wulff off the surface. A nice rainbow about 4 to 4.5lBs came to the net about 10 minutes later. I was fishing a barbless hook so I could catch and release (as stipulated in the fishery rules) as I'd taken a couple of small rainbows from another water the day before and didn't need any more fish in the freezer. After about 5 minutes of having its tummy tickled in the shallows the rainbow showered me with water and off she went. I tried the same technique for about the next hour, bearing in mind I was only on an evening ticket and only had a maximum of two and a half hours to fish. Next to nothing showed any interest in a dry fly though, a couple of stares was all so I decided to switch tactics and again had almost immediate results, netting a 6lB rainbow after a brief but spirited fight. I'd tied a couple of attempts at damselfly larvae the night before, but to be honest they looked more like highly surprised skinny tadpoles. I figured I had little to lose by giving one a go - nothing else was working and I was still pretty chuffed with the rainbow I'd had earlier. I cast to much the same area as before, dropping the "damseltad" about 8 feet off the bank side approx. 15 to 20 yards along from where I was standing. Straight away a lump came up out of the weed and had a damn good look at my fly not believing my luck I twitched the fly, then stripped a couple of feet of line, the rest is obvious. All in all one brilliant evening and one I hope I can repeat in a couple of weeks when I go back.
