"By the time he died, L was in his prime. He was just mastering his craft, had his own label, and dropped that classic Ebonics single"

-Lord Finesse
About the murder

On February 15, 1999, Lamont Coleman was shot nine times in the face and chest at 139th Street and Lenox Avenue near his Harlem home. In May the same year, police arrested Gerard Woodley in his Bronx apartment and charged him with second-degree murder. Police believe Woodley killed Lamont in retaliation for a long-standing beef with Lamonts brother, who is in prison.

While Woodley was originally held without bail, a police spokesperson said her records showed that he is currently out on bail after having only posted 1 dollar. The police spokesperson added that Woodley is due back in court on July 5 for a pre-trial hearing, but only for a control date, which means the case is going to be adjourned to a new date.

As in the case of Tupac and of Biggie Smalls, L`s killer remains free.

"Big L`s classic joint `Devils Son` started up a whole new generation of emcees who were influenced by his style, never to forget he smashed every DITC tune he ever rhymed on. Rest in peace, he will be missed."

Espen Voll

"Big L was a pure flamboyant MC. I had just heard one of his songs when i got the tragical news about his death. I feel that we have lost the most valuable MC in the game, and i think nobody can replace his fully automatic wordplay. I think Big L didn`t get the fame he so fully deserved, therefore i dedicate this page to BIG L, and hope that everyone who read this can`t mention Harlem without saying BIG L!!!!!!!."

R.I.P. BIG L
Early 1999 one of New York's most talented and prolific underground MC's was fatally shot in a drive by shooting. He was shot by a bullet not aimed at him. He was walking outside of his house, when a car pulled up, and shot him several times, before driving of. Report's have proved, that the bullet, was not aimed at him, and he was mistaken for someone else. This month we pay a tribute to one of Hip Hop's most talented, and unheard MC's. Big L' made a name for himself, in New York's famous, underground Hip Hop scene, and earlier this year, started his own underground label. But proved to be an ambition which was short lived. He was a lyricist, who had no bounds. He rhymed about anything and almost everything, with a flow, and lyrical skill, which put him in the same league as hip hop hop's most prolific MC's. Gang Starr pays a tribute to Big L' on there album Full Clip : A Decade of Gang Starr, for which the whole album is dedicated to him, with the additional release of the single, Full Clip.. And watch out in the stores, for Big L's last release, before his fatal shooting.

"He will sorely be missed by the hip hop community, as once again Hip Hop losses, a talented MC... His spirit will live forever, in the rhymes he has written for us all" - Baljinder 'Jigs' Jagdev
