CBA 2003 Championship Season

CBA Match 11
Barth Pond, Downers Grove, IL. Nov 8, 2003
It was all about catching bluegills in this season closing event. After cold night, the fish moved into deeper water and very few were caught in the opening hour. Some anglers were picking up some fish with the long poles; the bluegills were so cold they felt like cubes of ice. In the second hour, the action started improving and most anglers moved to their whip lines. After slow start the day turned into a good speed-fishing match with each angler catching over 100 fish. Derek Aniolkowski took good advantage of his end peg # 7 and caught enough bluegills to win the match. He used 2.5 meter whip with .25 g doctored Quad Float, 0.12-0.10 mm lines, and size 16 Mustad Wide Gape Barbless hook. All fish were caught with single or double maggots, while small amounts of groundbait were fed every minute.

Robert speed fishing for a second place in the match.

Elise always fishes well on Barth Pond.

Peter finished second in the 2003 CBA League.

CBA Match 10
Volcaning Lake, Hoffman Estates, IL. Oct 19, 2003
All top finishers caught small carp fishing long poles with corn on the hook.  This match proved once again that this small lake can provide some fantastic action.  However, it seems that the best times to fish it may be early Spring and late Fall.

Derek won his 4th CBA match this season.

With 1 round to go, Peter still leads the CBA League.

Elise finished third.

Robert finished fourth.

CBA Match 9
Fox River, Montgomery, IL.  Oct 5, 2003
Great day of fishing on the Fox.  Fishing long pole once again was the winning method. Presenting still bait in the moderate current seemed to work best and flat floats (around 3 grams) were used by top finishers.  Corn, worms, and bunches of maggots all proved to be effective baits for hungry river carp.

Robert finished second and is only one point behind Peter in the league standings

CBA Match 3
Lincoln Park Lagoon, Chicago, IL. May 18, 2003

The water in the lagoon was low and besides Peter who enjoyed great action on his end peg 1, other anglers were struggling to put together few pounds of fish. Fishing was definitely not as good as last year. In his catch, Peter included couple of really nice fish, one of them 23.4 lbs. carp. That's good enough for CBA's new biggest fish record. Peter fished corn over groundbait with a long pole at 7 meters from the bank. He used #12 elastic, 0.16 mm.  Stroft line, and size 14 Kamasan B611 hooks. Not a very strong set-up for fish like this!

And Patrick second in section B.

CBA Match 2
The Narrows, Naperville, IL. May 4, 2003

The second match of the 2003 season was fished on a new venue - The Narrows in Naperville. It was expected that weights of 50+ pounds will be needed to win the sections.  As you can see in the results below this hasn't happened. Bluegills didn't feed as well as expected and only 2 of the pound's resident carp were landed. However, with 5 weights over 20 lbs. it was exciting and interesting day out. Elise DeVilliers and Robert Wolan won their sections by speed fishing for bluegills and shiners. Robert used 3 meter whip, while Elise did the damage with 3-meter top kit fished to hand. Maggots were used for the hook bait and small amounts of groundbait were fed regularly to keep the fish coming. Paul Wells caught his bonus carp ledgering small bomb with a hair rigged corn. Peter Wolan had his carp on a long pole also with corn on the hook.

Weather: Mostly cloudy with strong winds from the East, temperature about 50 F.
