"The history of the First Virginia is the history of Virginia, and the history of Virginia is the history of the nation." Organized in 1680 as the Henrico County Militia, it became the 1st Virginia Regiment in 1754, George Washington as Colonel. In 1775 Patrick Henry took command, and Old First served throughout the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, and the Mexican War from 1846 to 1848.
Co. C 1st Virginia "Montgomery Guard" was formed in 1849 from the Irish of Richmond. As prewar militia they wore green coats, and carried a flag "ground work of green surrounding the harp of Erin". Patrick Moore served as Captain to 1860 when he was promoted to Colonel of the 1st VA, Lieutenant John Dooley was elected captain. They were called on active duty in 1859 for John Brown's Raid. On April 25, 1861 the Montgomery Guard and Old First were mustered into Confederate service...
