Where are all the great singers today?

Take any of the bands of today that actually make their own music and even come up with good or great songs. How many of them have a singer that you can actually listen to troughout a whole album without getting bored or annoyed? Take the British bands: Radiohead, Oasis, Blur, Travis, Cornershop, Placebo, Suede, Muse...you name it. For me their singers spell a strain on the ears or just plain boredom in the long run ("Head music" by Suede being an exception). The same goes for Americans bands, with their nu-metal or metal or rap or "punk" and whatnot.

Compared to what, eh?

What my point is is that if you take a time to listen to good selections of music from the sixties and seventies, you will find a lot more interesting and soulful singers. Roger Daltrey from The Who, Steve Marriot from The Small Faces, Robert Plant from Led Zeppelin, Phil May from The Pretty Things, Mick Jagger from The Stones... bands like Manfred Mann, Jefferson Airplane, The Beatles, The Hollies, Free and Cream all had good singers. The list could go on and on. The singer of a band doesn?'t have to "know how to sing" in the traditional sense to be an interesting and creative artist. Take John Lydon for example. Or Ray Davies from The Kinks. Neither of them could actually sing when they started with their first bands, and whether they still can is a matter of taste, but at least they are creative and original.

Exceptions

The most original and interesting singers of today happen to be female solo artists- Dido, Macy Gray and Alicia Keys come to mind. Another point is that I can?'t possibly have heard all the music that is out there, so there must also be other exceptions. Whether they are male or female, solo artists or singers in a band, I would be glad to hear their music, or names, at least. The notable lack of great singers cannot be as big as I?'ve imagined it to be, can it?
