| You got lucky, the doctor said after examining Scottie. Its just a bruised larynx. You should be back to normal in a few days. Scott and Mark breathed a sigh of relief. Im going to give you a prescription for a painkiller that also reduces swelling. Scottie nodded, thanking him hoarsely. Try to rest your voice as much as possible. Scottie nodded again. They all climbed into the car and sped back to the house. Quietly, they entered the house, unsure if Tiffany was awake or still sleeping. Satira was sitting on the couch, sipping hot tea. Scott softly relayed what the doctor had said as everyone sat down silently on the couches. She nodded, then asked Scottie if he wanted any tea. He nodded, and she stood, returning seconds later with the tea in hand. He sipped slowly, off in his own world. Do you think shell be okay? he asked softly. Satira shrugged. He sighed. *** Where is everyone? Scotties head snapped up. Tiffany was making her way down the stairs, still in her pajamas. He was lying on the couch, his hands behind his head. Out on the patio, he said, his voice barely audible. She nodded, sitting on the couch across from him. He sat up. What did the doctor say? Ill be fine in a few days, he relayed. She nodded again, smiling slightly. Good. He smiled. She stood, then settled on the couch next to him, lying down, resting her head on his chest. He shifted to a more comfortable position. Silence settled between them. She heard someone rummaging through the refrigerator, then heard the patio door close again. Whats gonna happen to Jeff? she asked quietly. Oh, hell be in jail for a while, Scottie returned. A smile crept to her face. Good. He smiled. She sat up, leaning on her elbow, her face just inches from his. Her hair tickled his nose, and he laughed, brushing it away from her face. Her smile fell as she leaned down, her lips catching his in a soft, gentle kiss. His thumb caressed her cheek, then slid around to her neck, intensifying the kiss. He winced, and she pulled away. He coughed, his face twisting. Her brow furled, and he shook his head, smiling. She smiled down at him, planting a quick kiss on the end of his nose. His eyes twinkled, and she rested her head on his shoulder, sighing contentedly. This was the way things were supposed to be. |
