This course is designed as an introduction to the art of designing settings and scenery for theatrical production. The student will develop rudimentary drafting skills as well as a basic understanding of the use of form, shape, color, and texture. The student will use an understanding of dramatic structure, theme, and symbolism to sketch, plan, draw, render, and design sets and scenery for a variety of plays read as a regular part of the class. The student will also be responsible for the creation of a to-scale model of at least one set. The class will culminate with a complete scenic design complete with building plans, full-color renderings, and to-scale model.

The student will be required to obtain necessary drawing tools and a variety of resource material for use in this class. The student will be required to maintain and complete a portfolio that will provide a total summation of his or her work in this class.
