This course is designed as an introduction to the American musical theatre as an art form.  The student will learn the genre�s origins and development as well its basic conventions and vocabulary.  The student will acquire the necessary skills to facilitate evaluation and criticism of live, taped, and filmed musical theatre expression.  The student will also learn the basic preparatory requirements of the musical audition and be able to apply them to simulated audition conditions.

The course will include the in-depth content study of the modern American musical.  Much of the classroom reading and assignments will be related to the work of Jerome Kern, Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, and Stephen Sondheim.  The student will also develop an understanding and appreciation for musicals primarily culled from the following: �West Side Story,� �Company,� �Sunday in the Park with George,� �Into the Woods,� �Passion,� �Show Boat,� �Oklahoma!,� �Carousel,� �Guys and Dolls,� and �Fiddler on the Roof.� Other shows may be added to this list at the discretion of the instructor.
