Acting 1 is an introduction to the craft of acting for the beginning theatre student. The focus of instruction is on the development of creativity instead of mimicry. By mastering the external requirements of theatrical performance, students will acquire the self-confidence needed eventually to go on to tasks of internalization such as working with subtext and scoring. All exercises are based on systematic repetition, reteaching, and rehearsal since everything associated with high quality theatre requires these three things.
The student will also develop an understanding of the Stanislavsky technique of physical acting, which emphasizes six specific areas of an actors training: cultural development, internal training, external training, interpretive training, rehearsal techniques, and performance skills. The student will develop a technique that provides the five basic attributes of good acting: analytical, interpretive, formalized, projectable, and repeatable. The student will apply skills obtained in this class to the preparation, rehearsal, and presentation of mimed scenes, monologues, and scenes in addition to regular improvisational activities.
The student is required to maintain and complete a portfolio that includes an acting journal, performance critiques, and responses to assigned readings. Each student is required to participate in or attend the FHS fall play and spring musical in addition to attending two outside productions during the school year. Appropriate alternatives may be assigned at the discretion of the instructor.
