Mark Clayden - Bass/sample acquisition 1. - What is your favourite part about touring? I love seeing different countries, cultures and people. Waking up in a different city everyday is really cool. Being your own boss and not having to wash the dishes are two very good aspects of touring. We have a really cool lifestyle. 2. - What is the worst part about touring? There are a few things I don't like. Having no personal space gets hard sometimes. We're all locked on the tour bus together for months at a time. Losing touch with people you care about gets tough. Having to sleep in a coffin sized bunk isn't one of the better aspects either. 3. - What is your favourite city ? I love New York. I've lived in cities (as appose to the country) for the past 8 years now and New York is the ultimate City. It's got all the bars, shops and people I could ever need. It never stops. 4. - Recount a tour story The thing that made me laugh about touring the most recently was Jamaica. We got flown to Jamaica with all our equipment and crew just to play 2 songs for TV. We did both the songs in one take and then spent the rest of the time smoking on the beach and dancing to live reggae bands. That's pretty funny by my standards. I was laughing the whole time, and if there's anybody out there who wants to book us again . . . 5. - What are some of the other bands/jobs that you've done? Johnny Carter and I started a band called 'Scurf' together which was pretty much the forerunner to Pitchshifter. Before that I sang in a bad called 'The Eternal' which were dreadful and best left forgotten. As for jobs. Well I used to sell books for the anarchist company 'AK Press' and I also used to work in a record store. I had to quit both when the touring schedule got so heavy. Working in a record store is good if you just love music like I do. I always knew what new LPs were coming out. 6. - What would you be doing if you weren't on tour? I'd be having a hard time trying to stick to a regular job. I like being my own boss and we are so lucky with Pitchshifter at the moment. We get to go to bed when most people are getting up. One thing I would like to do is take a long bath and sleep in a double bed. 7. - Favourite book? I really like a lot of books so that's a tough question. I suppose it would have to be 'The Bridge' by Iain Banks. He's a Scottish author and I like a lot of his stuff. 'The Wasp factory' is another classic of his. His language is so descriptive that he really puts you in there with the characters. 8. - Favourite record? It would have to be a compilation LP made up of songs from: Face to face, Strung out, Everclear, Far and Van pelt. 9. - Favourite film? A couple of my favourite films are 'Dead man' and 'Bliss'. I can't do them credit with my words so you should just go and see them. I don't want to be a film critic. 10. - Give us your top 5 tour LPs: 1.) - Strung out 'twisted by design'. 2.) - Far 'Water and solutions'. 3.) - Face to face 'live'. 4.) - Samiam 'You are freaking me out'. 5.) - Everclear 'So much for the afterglow'. 11. - Favourite Pitchshifter tune?
