LEARNING STYLES

MUSICAL/RYTHMIC LEARNING STYLE

Musical, or rythmic, learners have a talent for producing and appreciating music. They are generally good at remembering/writing melodies and rythm, playing musical instruments, singing and whistling because they tend to think in sounds, rythms and patterns. They can be extremely sensitive to environmental sounds such as crickets, frogs and birds.

My favorite lesson ever, in any class, was discussing the ethical codes of Kant versus Bentham/Mill. I enjoy philosophy and have a deep respect for many of the famous philosophers, especially Kant, Rand, Nietzsche and Machiavelli.

If I were to design a sample lesson in geography or history for musically/rythmically inclined learners, I might format it in the following way. If, for example, I was teaching european geography, I would have the students list the countries from top to bottom, and repeat that list over and over, with emphasis on the different syllables to create a rythm. eSTONia, LATvia, lithuAnia...etcetera. I would have them repeat this list (reading if necissary) to themselves and other people multiple times. By the end of that lesson, I can almost gurantee they would have all countries in Europe, and their respective locations, memorized. I once studied for a World Geography test in this way, and was able to learn Europe in less than an hour.
