About Colorado Springs

Founded in 1872, 2000 Census Population: 368,000

Situated at the base of Pikes Peak, Colorado Springs has been populated for hundreds of years by area Native American tribes who visited the healing springs as a worship site. Gen William J Palmer, US Army, founded the city in 1872 following his assignment as a geological surveor for the US government. He invited his friends, mostly of British decent, including his wife Queen to settle in his new town. So many of the city's first residents were of English origin, that the town was nicknamed "Little London". Colorado Springs is the second largest city in Colorado. There is a vibrant art and intellectual community with the city's five colleges and universities, as well as the typical western flavor of rodeos and cowboys. The cities industries are mainly aerospace related as Air Force Space Command, the US Air Force Academy, and Ft Carson are all located here.

This is the old county courthouse. Today it serves as the City Museum.

These are the Rockies as seen from about three minutes from downtown Colorado Springs. We are truly a mountain city

The view from Pikes Peak inspired Katherine Lee Bates to write the song "America the Beautiful" (Pikes Peak on a typical Western Sundown)

This is a view of downtown Colorado Springs close to where I live. The squat buildings are required by a city ordanance that prohibits tall buildings from blocking the view of our treasured mountains.
