Grunwald Set to Speak at
Centre Court Is there anything Grunwald could say to soothe the frustrated patrons? Please let us try to answer this question for you, and address an issue which we believe has been greatly avoided by the sports media in this town. No, the answer is No, plain and simple.... He could stand at centre court, and simply say. "Effective immediately, I will be resigning my post as General Manager of the Toronto Raptors." This would be the best possible solution for the future of our purple dinosaurs. My reasons for this WISH, are really quite simple: Glen Grunwald and the entire basketball operations at MLSE believed in 1999, and still do today, that the people of this city simply lack a fundamental understanding for basketball. Glen and the rest of the big-wig basketball operations people at MLSE, wanted to sell us a face. They wanted to mould us into Vince Carter fans rather than Toronto Raptor fans, or more importantly basketball fans. How else do you explain the fact that the Toronto Raptors traded away the James Naismith Award winner, for his team-mate. Sure their experiment was incredibly successful in the beginning. It seemed that Vince was on a sports hi-light show every night, had his face on cereal boxes and TV commercials. He's been voted and All Star starter for three consecutive years....blah, blah, blah. How many of those individual accomplishments lead to Raptor wins? Vince's star status soared, while the Toronto Raptors were being floored, and this management group was content with this. The management errors that this team has made over the past 5 years far outweigh their accomplishments, and the basketball fans of this city are aware of this. We are not the uneducated, Vince Carter starved zombies that they believe us to be. Yes, we still continue to fill the seats in the ACC, but we do this, not to watch the Raptors lose, we do it to see Michael Jordan and David Robinson one last time, we do it to watch how the game should be played, with effective ball movement, off the ball screens, an effective pick and roll, and countless other basketball designed plays that the Raptors have not executed in 3 years. This management group owes it to the fans of this city to bring someone in, who understand the game of basketball, and just as importantly knows how to put a winning product on the court. Nothing short of Grunwald standing at centre court, and resigning, will result in some salvage for yet another lost year.
