The February 26th Embarrassment

I'm sitting here trying to decide what to write about last night's embarrassment at the hands, of the now 21-38, Chicago Bulls.  I keep thinking of my mother, and trying to heed her advise.  I don't have anything nice to say about last night's game, but I'm also finding it really difficult to stay quiet, so I've decided to let it all out, and hope that my mother isn't listening.

Mr. Grunwald, I've criticized your job performance over the past several months, well here is your chance for a rebuttal...please explain last night.  This team has no excuse, except just one, for last night's fiasco.

Chicago is averaging a mere 93.5 points per game and somehow they manage to score 103 against Toronto.  To the Raptors credit, they did score 4 points more than their 27th league best 89.9 points per game.

The numbers below speak for themselves.  This is just a really bad team that gave up 34 points in the 4th quarter, while scoring only 23, to a team that is filled with college aged players.  Fatigue is not a valid excuse, as they've been at home for a week, and haven't played in 4 days.... so what is it ????

Like most diehard Raptor fans, I look at the 82 game schedule at the beginning of the season and try to analyze how they would do.  I predicted, before all the injuries that this team would finish at 35-47, and well out of playoff contention.  They are no better than they were last year, and in fact, are one year older.  With all the injuries, I said to a friend, that they would be lucky to win 25 games, but in both instances, I never thought that they would perform so poorly against a team such as the lowly Bulls.

So what happened last night?  Why did this team give up 61 points in the second half.  The answer is easy:  THEY DON'T CARE.  These guys just want the season to end, and they are merely going through the motions.  Only JYD has heart and plays with any conviction night in and night out.  MoPete, Alvin Williams and Antonio Davis are the latest secret weapons for the US military.  They threw up more bombs last night than the Iraqi's launched SCUD missiles during the Gulf War.  They went a combined 11 of 36 (30.6%).

The blame game is very simple in this case.  Either the players have tuned out the coach, in which case Lenny must go, or this team is not as good as Mr. Grunwald believed they would be.  If that in fact is the case, then Glen, stand on centre court during the last game of the season, and make another promise to the fans.  Promise us you will resign.  Do something, we're begging you.

This team's 4th quarter performance spoke loud and clear. Glen Grunwald wants to assess his team when healthy, and I believe that last night this team proved that it is beyond assessment.  It's time to stop making excuses and start giving Raptor fans a competitive team they so deserve.
