On the Town depicts the 24-hour leave of three sailors (Jules Munshin, Gene Kelly, and Frank Sinatra) in New York City in 1949. It begins at 6am and will end on the pier exactly the same time the next day. During the course of the day, the sailors plan to meet girls. Each of the three finds a girl, though sometimes it is not the right girl. New York women are tough, independent, and sassy in the late 1940s. One cabbie tour guide is a woman (Betty Garrett) with designs on one sailor. Using location shooting for the first time, the movie shows some of the famous landmarks in their pristine conditions of sixty years ago. Quick glimpses of the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty, and Broadway, are dotted between songs and dance. If there is tension, it is that Gabey (Kelly) keeps looking for Miss Turnstile (Vera-Ellen) a girl of his fantasies. Chip (Sinatra) finally gives up on his guide book and takes an interest in cabbie Hildy. Ozzie (Munshin) resembles a caveman and interests an anthropologist (Ann Miller). All complications are settled within the twenty-four hours, and all wave goodbye to a good time.
