The Stratified Earth

You don't have to dig down
To see the Earth's strata
Instead, climb up high.
See a layer of clay (that's the baseball field)
A layer of dirt, then
A layer of grass,
A layer of ice, and
A layer of brown crumpled leaves,
A layer of wood in buildings,
A layer of wood in treetops,
A layer of pine,
And a couple of layers of hills,
A layer of domed sky that spreads
All the way back over your head
(And back some more after that, too).
The Earth's everyday strata
Are easily visible
And plainly beautiful
Right now before the future when they'll be
The strata that you have to dig to see.
