The Sea was like Oil

The sea was like oil, it said
The Mediterranean Sea
So calm and so beautiful; so rich
It shines like the sun, life-giving.

The sea was like oil, I read
And pictured that oily sea
A stagnant and suffocating filth
It blocks out the sun, life-killing.

The sea was like oil, I read
So greasy, and fattening; so rich
And burning it smogs up the air
And it clogs up your veins, wrecks your skin.

For here in the land of the wealthy
The people are fine, fat, and free
But when riches are reapt without toil,
How it spoils the oil-like sea!
