"I think we can do it," Deke says.
You and Merlyn glance at each other doubtfully, but you say nothing. You've decided to trust this one to luck.
After another hour or so, and several direction changes, Deke shouts, "Hey, we've got it! I recognize this stuff I know where we are! C'mon, it's this way!"
"I'm glad he can tell where he is," you say, "Because I can hardly see anything in this darkness."
Merlyn nods. "Yeah. Neither can " her voice cuts off abruptly. "Renn!" she cries. "Don't move! Don't even breathe!"
Your heart skips about three beats, and you comply.
"W-w-what is it?" you manage to whisper.
"A snake," she replies. "Balancing on that treebranch." She points above your head. "And it's lowering itself right around your neck!"
You think of Merlyn's spells, but you can't remember if she has anything that'll help. You wonder if Deke can save you, but he's too far ahead to be of any help. You're on your own.
