Orientation Prerequisites The are no prerequisites for taking this course. Overview FIRST - �Firearm Instruction, Responsibility, and Safety Training� This program was developed by the NRA to meet the need for a firearms orientation program for new gun owners. The FIRST Steps program is not a �course� by definition but an orientation of a single handgun due to the narrow subject matter. It is designed to provide a hands-on approach to firearm safety, safe handling, shooting skill and proper operation of one specific model of pistol. This class can be completed in as little as three hours, and will allow for only two participants at a time. Ideally a single participant is preferred so he/she can maintain the instructor�s full attention and be more confident in learning without interruptions or distractions. Each participant will receive a Basic Pistol Shooting Handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules Brochure, Basic Firearm Training Program Brochure, and a Marksmanship Qualification Program Booklet. Requirements Valid Drivers license Ability to legally possess a firearm Eye and ear protection Double-action revolver or Semi-auto pistol in good working condition 100-200 rounds of factory ammunition (no reloads) *If you do not own or have access to a handgun, the instructor can furnish you one to use for a nominal fee. Ammunition is not included. Please contact the course instructor if you need to rent a handgun for the live-fire section. Class Goal To provide beginning shooters with an introduction to the knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary to own and use a specific pistol model safely. Lessons/Objectives Introduction to Pistol Safety, Parts, and Operation Introduction to Ammunition and the Fundamentals of Pistol Shooting Introduction to Pistol Shooting from the Benchrest Position Introduction to Pistol Cleaning, Storage, and Training Opportunities Course Completion Upon successful completion of the course, each participant will receive a course certificate (suitable for framing). The �Basic Practical� rocker patch will be given once a participant can demonstrate the firing of a qualifying �group�. NOTE: The time length (3 hours) is the intended time for this class. Additional time may be required to meet lesson objectives. There is no fee if additional time is needed. Course Fee: $60 |
