“Ya know, this is the wickedst thing I’ve done in years!”whispered Rich grinning as he followed his friend into the red Cadillac.
Daphne grinned mischieveously at him and climbed behind the wheel.”That’s exactly why we’re doing this, Ritchie. You started to get real soft. And stop whispering. This is not a conspiracy plot or something!”
“I can’t help it! I don’t go joyriding everyday!Hey, who said you could drive? You don’t have your driver’s license!”
“That’s why I’m driving”she answered and drove the car backwards, noisily bumping into some garbagecans.”Oops”she remarked, before hitting the pedal and driving really fast-toofast-up the lane.”Daphne!” Rich shouted frantically. “This is far too dangerous!Let me drive!”
“Spoilsport”she muttered, but eventually hit the brakes, nearly throwing the unwarned Rich out of the car and they switched places. After riding a couple of blocks they returned the car to its rightful owners who’d never know of its disappearance.
As they walked home, Daphne got an enormous grin on her face at which Rich had to laugh. She looked really normal and innocent on the outside, like him, but they were eachothers Partners in Crime. Daphne got excited about everything involving fast cars, what explained her broad grin. Fondly he threw his arms about her neck and said into her ear:”It’s a devious little girly y’are, don’t y’ know.”
“Is that why you’re scaring me to death? Sheesh”she replied, putting her hand to her heart. She gently loosened his grip on her. His habit of being touchy always made her a bit nervous, she only liked him as a friend, and didn’t want to encourage any more. She patted his cheek like a little child and then put her wrist theatrical to her forehead and said:”And thus part our ways my love. I’m there” she continued and jumped still bouncing with adrenaline the first steps to herflat. “Run along now, Rich. And good luck with your gigs tonight.”
Rich shook his head. Something about that ‘run along now’ had a bit of ‘go out and play’. “Good luck with studying tonight, love”he replied. “I’ll see ya tomorrow. Don’t inhale too much incense.”
Daph sniffed disapprovingly. “Night, Rich.”
“Hey Daph,”said Wendy when she came in. “What have you and Rich been up to?”
“Why do I always have to be ‘up to something?’”
“You usually are.”
Daphne wrinkled her nose. Wendy had the habit of hitting facts right at the center and seeing through all her defences, looking directly in that secret place where Daphne stored all her motives. And she definitely didn’t want anyone sneaking around in there.
“We just had a little fun. What are ya doin’?”she tried to change the subject.
Dee laughed, knowing exacty what her friend was trying but decided not to push the subject.”I’m finishing my last assignement. With a little luck my course’s will be done for the year.”
Daphne nodded. “That’d be great. I’ve only got a couple of days with exams as well.”
Just before Daph finished her sentence, Tamara came in. She threw her bag at the table and muttered an hello.
“How was your day, Tam?’asked Dee.”You’re a lucky bit. You know, we have to do our last days exams in this terrible heat.”
“I feel sooo sorry for you.”
Daphne sighed and rolled her eyes as she saw Dee was ready to start up an argument with Tam who was enjoying it. Daphne gave them her special warning glance and went to the door of her own room.
“I didn’t really SAY anything”said Dee aggrieved.
“You would have. You KNOW that, darling.” The three girls knew eachother extremely well, and didn’t really need all that much words.
The next morning…
Tamara walked into the kitchen and saw breakfast was made and the kitchen was tidy, which meant Daphne was up and had left for school. She sat down and had a glass of water, which was (AND is)her very bad habit of only having in the morning. She decided shopping might be nice to fill her day. But just as she put her glass (unneccisarily I might add)in the dishwasher, the phone rang.
“Hi” she sad a bit shy into the receiver.”Tamara? It’s me Scott. Are you doing anything today?”
“Not really, I guess.”
“Could I come over to watch a movie with you or something?”
“Well..sure”replied Tamara, trying not to sound greedy. She LIKED Scott, for some reason…
Barely fifteen minutes later Scott arrived. Thay decided to watch Road Trip, since they both loved that crap movies.(Hey, no offence to you Americans, I should keep my comments down, but it’s so much fun, you know) Halfway the movie, Scott wrapped his arm about Tamara. She liked it, and leaned against his chest. He laughed a little and turned towards her, for a kiss. She was surprised, thinking of the silent “mate not lover” rule between the guys of FIVE and the three girls, but she anticipated the kiss. Just when their lips were about to meet, the front door was thrown open wide and Dee barged in. Startled, the lovebirds pulled away.
“They loved my design!” exclaimed Wendy happily. “I got an A!”
“Great,” muttered Tamara, moving her hand through her slightly messy hair.
“You could be happy for me!What are ya watchin’?”she plopped on the couch and the lovebirds sighed deeply knowing “the” moment was over…
